This great Jazz two-fer features two of guitarist Grant Green's '60s work trio and quartet featuring incredible organ work from Sam Lazar and Big John Patton. This release contains the complete albums Space Flight (1960) and Iron City (1967). The question "When is a Grant Green album not a Grant Green album?" is answered by this release, with the reply, when "It's actually Grant Green as a sidesman on two album released by other artists".
Philadelphia jazz singer Lou Lanza had an excellent point when he asserted that jazz improvisers who ignore rock and R&B songs "are cutting themselves off from a lot of worthwhile material." Lanza wasn't suggesting that jazz artists should totally give up the Tin Pan Alley standards they've been performing all these years – actually, he's done plenty of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin gems himself – but he was saying that if you're going to use popular songs as vehicles for jazz expression, there is no reason not to interpret Sting, Billy Joel or Prince along with Harry Warren and George Gershwin.
Beginning his professional career in Chicago in 2001, Kyle has appeared extensively throughout the city and beyond. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Melvin Rhyne, “Killer” Ray Appelton, Chris Foreman, Victor Goines, George Fludas, Ben Paterson and many others. While Asche is a versatile guitarist adept and comfortable in many different genres, the tenets of his style often find him in the company of many of Chicago’s premier jazz vocalists and Hammond organ bands. Now nearly 20 years into his tenure in Chicago, Asche continues to perform around the city on a weekly basis and can be found at many of the city’s jazz rooms regularly. As an active and caring music educator, he has held the jazz guitar faculty position at Loyola University Chicago since 2010.
In the summer of 2017, New Organ Trio entered into a collaboration with Tobaksgaarden about a series of café concerts with the title: Sommerjazz. A number of jazz saxophonists were invited to Assens to participate as soloists, and we recorded all the concerts. These recordings have now become an album entitled New Organ Trio meets Christina von Bülow - Pernille Bévort - Nicolai Schultz, and through the winter we have listened and edited the many footage.
