FLAC (tracks), Lossless +Booklet | 1:10:54 | 241Mb
Genre: Classical

This album brings together Kodály’s complete organ music with the world premiere recording of Erno Dohnányi’s only piece for organ, the eloquent Fantasie. Sokola’s intense and compelling Passacaglia holds a special place in the organ repertoire, Wiedermann’s Pastorale dorico was composed during the dark days of the Second World War, and Novák’s attractive Prelude is a study in subdued tonal contrasts. Zoltán Kodály’s organ works have a distinct musical language unlike any other composer, with the imposing Organoedia ad missam lectam being amongst his most important non-choral works from the post-war era, and Epigrams, originally for voice and piano, heard here in a transcription by Gábor Trajtler.

Volume 1 in a new collection of Charles-Marie Widor’s Organ Symphonies, performed by Joseph Nolan on the magnificent Cavaillé-Coll organ of L’église de la Madeleine, Paris. His Lyonnaise kinsfolk were organ-builders, he showed early talent for the instrument, and for decades was the embodiment of its might and splendour across the Gallic domain - his ‘Organ Symphonies’ were genre-defining in their influence.

César Franck gradually abandoned his career as a virtuoso pianist as he completed his training under various Parisian masters, one of whom was the organist François Benoist. Franck then served as organist in various important Parisian churches from 1853 onwards before accepting a position at Sainte-Clotilde, where he benefited from Cavaillé-Coll's brand new instrument. He composed works for the organ as well as in other genres that became part of the apotheosis of what is now termed Le Renouveau français. Franck also composed pieces specifically intended for the harmonium. We are proud to mark the bicentenary of his birth with a reissue of his complete works for organ and for harmonium, in which Joris Verdin's fascinating interpretations have incorporated Franck’s own recently discovered metronome markings.

This acclaimed recording series of the complete organ works of Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707) offers a unique musical journey in the footsteps of the Danish-German Baroque master. Organist Bine Bryndorf explores Buxtehudes inventive stylus phantasticus through the beautiful sound of five historic organs around the Baltic area, beginning in the composers native town of Elsinore, and ending in Lübeck, where his successor Johann Sebastian Bach famously went to experience the art of the ageing organ legend.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the American William Humphreys Dayas (1864-1903) was the leading professor of piano at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He was an important figure: he studied with Liszt, was friends with Busoni and became a major pedagogue, holding teaching posts in Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Cologne before he came to Manchester in 1895. Although Dayas left only a handful of compositions, two of them are major organ sonatas - passionate, Lisztian works that have remained completely unknown until now. Dayas also arranged for organ the Thème varié for piano four hands by another forgotten American composer, Arthur H. Bird (1856-1923), a further important addition to the late-Romantic organ repertoire. Dr Jan Lehtola is one the most successful and progressive Finnish organists of his generation. He has appeared with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Lahti Symphony, Tampere Philharmonic and Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestras and the St Michael Strings.

Buxtehude began his activity at St. Mary’s Church exactly 350 years ago, and the City of Lübeck fittingly commemorated this anniversary by awarding this year’s renowned Buxtehude Prize to organist Harald Vogel. Matched by no other musician, Vogel has distinguished himself both in historical organ playing in general and with Buxtehude’s oeuvre in particular. To celebrate this occasion, MDG is now releasing a highly interesting new edition containing all of Buxtehude’s works from the Codex E. B. of 1688 and including - as a surprising rarity - the recording premiere of a sonata with obbligato gamba.

Katarzyna Mycka is also known by critics as “the one who dances with mallets”. She has recorded a cross-section of her repertoire on over 10 CDs and commissioned numerous compositions. Perfect touch technique and a dreamlike rhythmic precision are characteristic for her playing on the concert marimba, consisting of 60 narrow wooden plates and resonance tubes made of metal.
