Ole Edvard Antonsen came to my attention, initially, in an accomplished disc of trumpet concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra (EMI, 2/94), where his dazzling virtuosity and lyrical, if unrefined, musicality was refreshing to say the least. This latest recording is less artistically ambitious in its popular vein though this is not the overriding reason why it is ultimately a disappointment. ''Pulling out the stops!'' is a trite and misjudged title, for a start, since the disc is notable more for its arrangements of melodic gems than the rousing voluntaries which most people associate with the 'no holds barred' combination of trumpet and organ. What is more, this admittedly limited instrumental medium has greater expressive potential than one might imagine (listen to the arrangements and performances of Maurice Andre and Marie-Claire Alain) and therefore a more appropriate catch-phrase would not have gone amiss.

Dietrich Buxtehude's organ works are today in the standard repertoire for organists all over the world, but this is the first time an organist has engaged so intimately with Buxtehude by using the very instrument on which the works were composed. Dacapo Records' new Buxtehude series will consist of a total of six CDs, and besides the St. Mary's Church in Elsinore they will be recorded in the other two churches where the composer was employed, the S:ta Maria Church in Helsingborg and the Marienkirche in Lübeck.

Sensational organ transcriptions have made Jean Guillou famous far beyond his native France. Taught by Marcel Dupré, his command not only of organ playing but also of the piano and composition is demonstrated by the absolutely boundless technical and intellectual demands posed by his oeuvre. In Zuzana Ferjen 269;iková, Guillou now has found more than just a worthy heir: the first volume in our series featuring Guillou's organ works includes a recording premiere and reveals the profound emotional affinity uniting these two exceptional artists.

The organ sonatas of Josef Rheinberger still feature large in the repertoire of church organists everywhere, thanks to their attractive melodies and fluent writing for the instrument. Rheinberger’s industry and his skill as a teacher have overshadowed his gifts as a composer in other genres, which this new release helps to redress with suites and tone-pictures for the combination of strings and organ. Oboist Cristina Monticoli also joins her Italian colleagues for two arrangements which sympathetically transfer the main melodies of movements from the organ sonatas to the oboe.

Charles-Marie Widor: this name is the embodiment of French organ music of the nineteenth century. The illustrious organ builder Cavaillé-Coll promoted Widors career while he was still a student and recommended him for the post of titular organist at St-Sulpice. Widor quickly gained renown as a composer, and his ten symphonies for organ solo are regarded even today as the non plus ultra of the virtuoso French school.

Brilliant Classics has already published all 88 of Domenico Cimarosa’s keyboard sonatas in their commonly encountered appearance as harpsichord pieces (BC95027), as well as an album of 30 sonatas in arrangements for guitar (BC94172). He may still be better known as a composer of comic opera, for masterpiece such as Il matrimonio segreto, but this new album of the sonatas in versions for organ celebrates the variety and adaptability of Cimarosa’s idiom and demonstrates why he was so lionized in his own time.

Volume 2 in a new collection of Charles-Marie Widor’s Organ Symphonies, performed by Joseph Nolan on the magnificent Cavaillé-Coll organ of L’église de la Madeleine, Paris. Bridging the generations from Mendelssohn to Messiaen, Empire to Republic, Widor was born to the organ. His Lyonnaise kinsfolk were organ-builders, he showed early talent for the instrument, and for decades was the embodiment of its might and splendour across the Gallic domain - his ‘Organ Symphonies’ were genre-defining in their influence.
