In a church in a quiet northern Italian town survives a hidden jewel: an organ dating from 1749 which is perfect for Bach’s music. In this recording, renowned Italian organist Luca Guglielmi presents a fine sequence of some of Bach’s finest keyboard works, played on the historic organ in the Chiesa di San Nicolao, Alice Castello. The programme is compiled from works by Bach collected by two eighteenth century scholars, Padre Martini and Friedrich Wilhelm Rust, which would surely have been performed in the famous Abbey of Montecassino, a magnet for musical travellers on ‘The Grand Tour’. Martini and Rust played a major role in the creation of the first collected edition of Bach’s works. Guglielmi’s neatly-structured programme includes the brilliant Fantasia Chromatica, the solemn Fuga sopra il Magnificat, the fine Fantasia pro Organo in C minor and the great Fantasia & Fuga pro Organo, as well as Preludes and Fantasias, Duetti from the Clavierübung and seven Chorales for the Catechism, all demonstrating the vivid colours of this remarkable instrument.

This is Emanuele Cardi’s fourth album for Brilliant Classics after recordings which display this talented organist’s wide musical sympathies and talents, ranging from music by Bach’s contemporary Tunder (94901) to still more obscure delights from Naples (94622) and exuberant arrangements of Tchaikovsky and Saint‐Saëns for organ four-hands (94881). ‘He is a great connoisseur of Baroque repertoire,’ noted the Spanish magazine Codalario of Cardi’s Neapolitan disc, ‘and it shows in his ability to give these pieces such native colour: this is a remarkable album.’ On this occasion he has recorded an album which concludes with Bach’s most famous yet possibly most spurious work for organ, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, whose Italianate flourishes surely have their origin in a work for violin, whether or not by Bach himself.

Clavier-Übung III is considered Johann Sebastian Bach’s most important and most complete organ work, containing some of his pieces for the instrument that are the most complex musically and the most demanding technically. Formally, it takes its inspiration from the religious music of the masters of the stile antico. But, at the same time, Bach was an innovator and here incorporated modern Baroque musical forms, such as the chorale à la française and the gallant style. Léon Berben gives us his interpretation, a new and fresh view of this milestone in organ music, using the exceptional sound colours of an organ contemporary with Bach and largely preserved in its original state: the Christoph Treutmann organ in Grauhof (Germany).

Clavier Übung means 'a keyboard exercise' or 'practice', which is rather a humble term for such exquisitely-crafted music. Bach borrowed it from Johann Kuhnau, his predecessor as cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, who in 1689 had published a collection called Neue Clavier-Übung consisting of seven suites of dances. Bach's Clavier Übung III was published in 1739, when Leipzig was celebrating the bicentenary of the Lutheran Reformation. The hymns on which the 12 organ chorales on this disc are based focus on the six chief parts of the Lutheran Catechism: the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, Holy Baptism, Confession and Communion.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Clavierübung III, published in 1739, is a cornerstone of organ literature, demonstrating the composer’s unparalleled mastery of counterpoint and his deep theological insight. Commonly referred to as the “German Organ Mass,” this collection of works for organ is more than just a technical display; it serves as a profound reflection on Lutheran liturgy, doctrine, and Trinitarian symbolism. With this work, Bach created a comprehensive musical discourse that encapsulates the essence of his spiritual and artistic philosophy.

This new recording features some unique historical organs in Germany, which have a strong link with the great composer himself, organs which Bach might have known, and whose builders he greatly respected. Matteo Messori is one of the leading Baroque organists of Europe; his previous recordings for Brilliant Classics (Kunst der Fuge, BC 94061 and Clavierubing, BC 94201) have been awarded 5 star reviews in international classical magazines. His Schutz edition is a recorded landmark for that still neglected master.
