Recorded at the stunning Harpa Concert Hall by the Reykjavík Orkestra, conducted by Viktor Orri Árnason, the new album, Orchestral Works, celebrates Gabríel Ólafs’ first five years as a recording artist and professional composer. Thirteen of the compositions are presented here in brand new orchestral arrangements with works drawn from Gabríel’s solo albums Absent Minded, Solon Islandus, and Lullabies for Piano and Cello. Orchestral Works marks a milestone in the evolution of his artistry, adding a fresh twist to postmodern classical music, and his newfound love with the orchestra.

Orkestra is the brainchild of singer/bassist Kelly Groucutt and violinist Mik Kaminski, former members of the Electric Light Orchestra who formed the band in 1987, just after Electric Light Orchestra packed it in. Their purpose, of course, is to act as an ELO clone band, performing the group's repertoire in concert in order to satiate the hunger of ELO fans no longer being addressed by founder/leader Jeff Lynne, who headed off to California. All well and good, but after half a dozen years on the road, the band had worked up their own material in the style of ELO, and here is an album's worth of it.

Orkestra Eustoria sounds like an exotic jazz ensemble based in a far away land–there's something about the "eu" and the "k" that reminds me of the Basque Country–but this space-age modern fusion ensemble is based in Astoria, Queens. Saxophonist Peter Sparacino, the leader of the Orkestra, has adopted this esoteric moniker in honor of Astoria, which is home to a very diverse population. That theme carries over into the music, of course, with its melding of styles and influences from all over the planet. Sparacino grabbed a few of his friends, musicians who represented "some of the most innovative and internationally recognized tour musicians working today," and started rehearsing with them extensively so that he could "solve his own musical shortcomings."

Russell Gunn’s multi-piece ensemble the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra wowed us with their last album ‘Get It How You Live’ and Pyramids follows that up with another set heavy on the Egyptian inspired spiritual jazz tip. The intense, driving force that is ‘Black Indian Rain Dance’ forges ahead with that big, bold brass section, ‘Kabla Khufu’ is more abstract yet retains structure while ‘Voyage Of The Pyramid Builders’ sounds like soundtrack. The expansive ‘Pan-Afrikan Benediction’ is a ponderous, bluesy gem, the shimmering ‘The Truth of Time’ has a dub underbelly while ‘Olmec (Xi) offers quieter moments amidst the bustle. Another great new jazz offering.

The night before the show, Art called to say the alternator in his car had gone out, and he was buying a ticket to get the Greyhound out of Memphis the next morning. The morning after the show, Adam called to ask if I knew where his guitar, his shoes, or his bag had ended up. What happened inbetween was pure magic, music like none ever heard before, soaring over the Nashville skyline on a hot summer night, fueled by a bottle of tequila, too many vodka drinks to count (thanks to our sponsor), and a mysterious “Happy Birthday Artie” cake that just coincidentally was waiting for us in the dressing room no relation.

Gabríel Ólafs’ holistic vision, melodic story-telling, and atmospheric arrangements set him apart as a true auteur of postmodern classical music. At only 24, he is arguably Gen Z’s most important composer. After his acclaimed Piano Works (2020) and poetic multi-media piece Solon Islandus (2022), Gabríel returns with a new album inspired by the folk songs of his native Iceland.
