‘Oscar™ Cinema’ might be a suitable alternative title for the new album with which the strings of the Santa Cecilia Academy (Archi di Santa Cecilia) under the direction of Luigi Piovano – principal cellist of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and for several years now also much admired as a conductor – begin their collaboration with Arcana, after two recordings for Eloquentia released in 2014 and 2015.

If planning to investigate the work of Neal Casal, start here. The album, although a trifle long, is shot through with a genuine and varied musicality. There's a very real sense of play; explicitly with the amused outtakes of the artist's father navigating his way through approximate renditions of old boot camp favorites, and also the eponymous "Kid on Trumpet." Charm aside, Casal's own compositions really take flight on the venomous "No One Said a Word," the quietly foreboding "Basement Dreams," and the bluesy "I Run and Hide complete with distant harmonica.

In The Big Country Gregory Peck plays a seafaring man who heads west to marry Carroll Baker, the daughter of rancher Charles Bickford. Bickford is currently embroiled in a water-rights feud with covetous Burl Ives, so both he and his daughter are hoping that Peck can take care of himself. But Peck, who doesn't belief in fisticuffs, appears to be a coward, especially when challenged by Bickford's cocksure foreman Charlton Heston. The far-from-cowardly Peck decides to distance himself from the machismo overload at the Bickford spread, settling for a romance with headstrong schoolmarm Jean Simmons, whose water-rich lands are being fought over by the two warring ranchers. When Jean is kidnapped by Ives' no-good son Chuck Connors, Peck decides to take action.

James Newton Howard was well-established as a keyboardist, songwriter, producer, and arranger in the realm of soft rock before he cemented his legacy as an A-list film and television composer during the '90s. Highlights of his rock resumé in the '70s and '80s had included touring and recording with Elton John and working on albums with the likes of Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, and Toto. After earning his first composing credit on the 1985 comedy Head Office, his first Academy Award nomination came with the 1991 drama The Prince of Tides. Known for delivering wistful chamber music, playful comedic fare, or alternatively ominous or high-octane orchestral music as called for, Howard became more and more in demand for the latter during the 2000s, due in part to his frequent collaborations with director M. Night Shyamalan.

Convicts Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier escape from a chain gang. Curtis' character, John "Joker" Jackson, hates blacks, while Poitier's character, Noah Cullen, hates whites. However, the men are manacled together, forced to rely on each other to survive. Captured at one point by a lynch-happy mob, the convicts are rescued by Big Sam (Lon Chaney Jr.), himself a former convict. The men are later sheltered by a lonely, love-hungry widow played by Cara Williams, who offers to turn in Cullen if Joker will stay with her. By the time the two men are within hailing distance of a train that might take them to freedom, they have become friends.
