Quand elle disparaît, le 3 février 1975, des millions d'Égyptiens suivent son cortège funèbre, comme ils l'avaient fait quinze mois plus tôt après la mort du président Nasser. Le retentissement, là encore, est planétaire. Aucune chanteuse n'a été adulée à l'égale d'Oum Kalthoum, aucune voix, si belle soit-elle, n'a incarné comme elle l'âme de tout un peuple, au point d'être sacralisée de son vivant, non seulement en Égypte, mais dans tout le monde arabe. "Au-dessus d’elle, il n’y a que le Coran", résumait le journaliste Mustapha Amin, l'un de ses amis.

Ibrahim Maalouf, born in Beirut and now residing in Paris, is a virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet, which enables him to work with the maqam, or system of melodic modes, in traditional Arabic music. He and his carefully selected powerhouse band pay tribute to one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time, Oum Kalthoum.

Pour ce troisième album chez Buda Musique, Waed Bouhassoun, remarquable chanteuse et joueuse de oud syrienne, dans la lignée d’Oum Kalthoum et Asmahan, par ailleurs déjà très remarquée chez Jordi Savall, s’est entourée du flûtiste turc, Kudsi Erguner, du flûtiste syrien Moslem Rahal, et du joueur de saz et chanteur kurde Rusan Filizek. Elle chante l’amour courtois en arabe, en turc ou en langue bédouine et a mis en musique de façon convaincante un poème de Clément Marot (1496-1544) dont l’élégance et l’humanisme s’accorde bien au ton des œuvres de son répertoire.Waed nous mène sur des chemins, parfois inconnus, que nous découvrons avec délices.

Ibrahim Maalouf isn’t one of those musicians where if you’ve heard one of their songs, you’ve heard them all. Apparently being the world’s best quarter tone trumpet player wasn’t enough for him, because he is a master composer, arranger, producer and cultural diplomat in addition to being highly versatile as an instrumentalist.
