Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996 is the second installment of Music From Memory’s Brazilian series. This volume picks up where the first Outro Tempo left off, shedding light on a new wave of experimentalism that emerged in Brazil in the late 1980s and 1990s. The twenty tracks collected uncover another area of Brazilian music that looked to the future for inspiration. This time it drifts beyond the rainforest and into the pulsating heart of Brazil’s great cities, where it meets a generation of young artists eager to radically change the face of contemporary Brazilian music. In Outro Tempo II the avant garde and pop worlds meld in a haze of percussion and electronics. It presents another uncompromising and magnetic reinterpretation of the limits of Brazilian music.

Wishing Well’s follow up to their 2016 debut album Chasing Rainbows features a new vocalist and adds a Hammond organist giving the five-piece band a distinctive 1970’s Hard Rock sound. The production and mix, while professional, is extraordinarily clean and emphasizes the vocals at the expense of the rest of the band. The net effect is a distinct lack of heavy edge. There are some ambitious risks, but it suffers from a metal-by-the-numbers presentation which lacks imagination and spontaneity.

Since forming in 2011, the Norwegian duo Highasakite have delivered two chart-topping albums of melodic and often adventurous synth-led pop. Following their massive 2014 debut, Silent Treatment, 2016's ambitious Camp Echo took a heavier approach, using themes of war and climate change to fuel its soaring pop hooks. Their third outing, Uranium Heart, plays as an altogether more subdued affair, largely made up of downtempo cuts whose reflective content lies closer to the heart. More or less a breakup album, Uranium Heart charts the path of a broken heart from loss and longing to healing with singer Ingrid Håvik attacking the nuanced balladry with the same finesse she's typically brought to the band's electro-pop bangers.

The verb, the noun, the substance, the action, the command: make a mark! With that, PAINT (guitarist/singer Pedrum Siadatian of the Allah-Las), is making his mark too with his first, self-titled solo record. PAINT started by four-tracking his own strange, slow-growing ideas just after Allah-Las third album Calico Review (2016) - fed or led by a certain acid-bitter poetry (Gregory Corso and John Lennon) and the murky music of Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett. Siadatian found a producer and partner-in-grime in adept cinematic psychedelicist Frank Maston, who instinctively understood these songs would fall apart if scrubbed too roughly in the studio.
