After Speak of the Devil, Tribute, Just Say Ozzy, Live & Loud, the Ozzfest collections, and both Osbourne-fronted Black Sabbath live discs, one would think that Ozzy had exhausted his concert-album appeal. After decades of hard living, tragic band member deaths, and numerous health scares, the Prince of Darkness delivers his 13th solo album fast on the heels of his 2020 mainstream smash Ordinary Man. Like its predecessor, Patient Number 9 was produced by multi-instrumentalist Andrew Watt and boasts a head-spinning array of guest stars—including return appearances from Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith alongside Metallica bassist (and Ozzy’s former sideman) Robert Trujillo and late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins (in one of his last recording sessions).

The album featured significant developments in heavy metal technique, in particular its use of double-kick drumming on tracks such as Dissident Aggressor , and includes a pop-metal cover of Diamonds & Rust by folk singer Joan Baez. Sin After Sin appeared in April 1977 on CBS, and was the first of eleven consecutive albums to be certified Gold or higher by the RIAA. Priest then recorded 1978's Stained Class, produced by Dennis MacKay, and Killing Machine (released in America as Hell Bent for Leather).
