Il y a plusieurs millions d'années, un événement capital a eu lieu dans les plaines d'Afrique : des grands singes quadrupèdes se sont redressés et ont marché sur leurs seules pattes arrière. Ce changement de posture a petit à petit entraîné une évolution de leur cerveau et, au fil du temps, ces singes sont devenus des hommes. Les scientifiques savaient que la chose s'était produite, mais ils ignoraient quand et pourquoi. Cet épisode revient sur la découverte en Éthiopie, en 2000, du fossile de Selam, une petite fille morte à un âge estimé à 3 ans, et qui aurait vécu il y a environ 3,3 millions d'années.

L'Homo erectus, l'un des premiers représentants du genre humain, a le premier quitté l'Afrique il y a un peu moins de deux millions d'années. Les vagues migratoires successives ont notamment donné naissance à l'homme de Florès en Indonésie, et plus tard, en Europe, à l'homme de Néandertal. Mais pourquoi celui-ci a-t-il disparu au moment de l'arrivée de l'Homo sapiens en Europe ? Longtemps, les paléontologues ont supposé que les premières populations d'hommes modernes avaient fini par absorber les Néandertaliens par métissage, mais aucune trace de l'ADN de l'homme de Néandertal n'existe dans les gènes des humains d'aujourd'hui. Peu à peu repoussé vers des zones marginales, l'homme de Néandertal aurait en fait succombé à sa rencontre avec l'Homo sapiens.

This is a fantastic 20 something part account of WWII. I have seen, read, studied WWII and all of the major & minor characters & battles so on and so forth. One thing I've learned over the years, is that just when you think you know all of the stories of WWII, there is a thousand more you haven't heard of. I know a lot especially compared to my contemporaries & even more than those who lived through that time. More than anything I find it a shame that all those that were part of the fight against the Axis powers (that's Germany, Japan & Italy for those that don't know, but you probably aren't reading this anyway) but even to those that think they know everything about WWII this is still a pretty entertaining watch.
