Paganini

Kremer made this recording in 1984 and it is an extraordinary recital, mostly of contemporary pieces for solo violin meant as homages to Paganini and especially his famous 24th Caprice. Milstein's Paganiniana is only an appetizer, a fine set of variations but quite conventional in outlook. On the other hand Rochberg's Caprice Variations (of which Kremer plays only a selection of 24, in a rearranged order, out of its 50 total, the 51st being a short statement of Paganini's 24th) is an extraordinary catalog of wild contemporary violin sounds, colors and effects put at the service of a spellbinding imagination.

For his second CD release, 25-year-old, New York-born violist David Aaron Carpenter is joined by Vladimir Ashkenazy who leads the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Together they perform the Symphony with Viola obbligato, “Harold in Italy,” which Hector Berlioz originally wrote on a commission from Paganini. The present recording features, for the first time, an unpublished more virtuosic soloist part written for Paganini.

Young and talented Elisa Tomellini loves challenges and is used to climbing high mountain peaks. Both physical as well as musical. No wonder then that she is the first woman to perform the first version of the Etudes aprés Paganini (S.140) that Robert Schumann reviewed as “the most difficult work ever written for the piano, as is the original for the violin. Certainly only a few pianists will be able to tackle them, perhaps no more than four of five in the world.” Dynamic is proud to feature one of them.

Gitlis plays the violin concerti at a faster tempo than most soloists. It doesn't work very well for violin concerto number one, but it completely rocks for concerto number two I absolutely love it! In fact it's my favorite classical work. I can't rave enough about it. He uses his own cadenza which is fantastic. He uses Emile Sauret's cadenza in the first concerto, which I don't like very much too drawn out and long winded. The three Caprices and the I Palpiti are as good as it gets too..

Major hit was the song of the album "Berlin By Night", climbed to the top of the German charts and became the soundtrack to the movie "Alpha City".
