Pan Flute Music

Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is a milestone in music. On the one hand, the cycle is firmly anchored in baroque aesthetics, on the other hand, one is already moving in the direction of the galant style. In our new recording, Vivaldi's works have been carefully arranged for pan flute with orchestra by the composer Carlos Pino-Quintana. The great challenge was to maintain or even emphasise polyphonic elements of the original solo part in the new instrumentation, to subtly transfer the technical characteristics of the violin to the pan flute, to find adequate keys, and to balance the resulting contrasts and timbres between solo and tutti in the sense of concerto grosso.

Thanks to countless TV ads hawking collections of his music, Zamfir is almost universally recognized as the "Master of the Pan Flute." While that title may be cause for smirking in some quarters – whether because of its overexposure or a general distaste for easy listening music – it's true that Gheorghe Zamfir was single-handedly responsible for popularizing an ancient, traditional Eastern European instrument that was in danger of dying out for lack of interest. Made of bamboo, reeds, or wood, the pan flute (also known as the pan pipes or the nai) consists of a series of tubes, each of which sounds one individual note, and are fastened together side by side.

The combination of the Pan Flute and the Organ makes perfect sense, given that the organ is in fact a giant pan flute in the production of the tone. How well the two instruments fit together and how beautifully they can grow to form one large instrument is demonstrated on the present recording.The organ is a 1722 Matthäus Carlen organ in Valais Switzerland, and the musicians have chosen repertoire from this period, in juxtaposition with traditional Rumanian music in which the pan flute already for centuries plays an essential role: works by Vivaldi, Froberger, Purcell, Handel, Bach and Muffat are set against folk music from Bukovina and Romania.

The pan flute holds a significant place in Romanian folk music, with Gheorghe Zamfir pioneering flute techniques in the '80s, elevating it to a concert level worldwide. In the hands of Zamfir, the pan flute becomes an instrument equal to traditional orchestral instruments, offering endless expressive colours and technical capabilities for playing modern music.
