Pantera The preeminent metal band of the early to mid-'90s, Pantera put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passé. Loathe to admit it, the Texas band had in fact been one of those '80s metal bands, releasing fairly unsuccessful (and later disowned) glam-inspired music throughout much of the decade. Arlington, Texas heavy metallers Pantera formed in 1981, and left a lasting (and blisteringly brutal) legacy over the next 22 years, before disbanding in 2003. With their 1990 album Cowboys From Hell, Pantera debuted their signature sound and invigorated the metal scene while enlisting legions of devoted fans around the world. For the next decade, the band continued to ascend to the top of the music world, earning four platinum albums and, with 1994's Far Beyond Driven, a #1 debut on the Billboard album chart. THREE DISC SET FEATURING THE BEST LIVE PANTERA BROADCAST RECORDINGS AVAILABLE Formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers - drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell - along with lead vocalist Terry Glaze, Pantera started life as a glam-metal band, releasing four albums independently during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 1986 and released Power Metal in 88. In 1989, the band secured a record deal with major-label Atco. With their fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced the groove metal genre, while its 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power exhibited an even heavier sound.
