This is a great reminder of what the best 1980s pop/rock sounded like. It includes most of Pat Benatar's hits, with the unfortunate omission of I Need A Lover, the passionate melodic churner from 1979. It also includes her best album tracks like the poignant Hell Is For Children but her excellent version of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights is missing. Benatar specialised in powerful rock numbers with strong power chords and catchy hooks, delivered to full effect in her belting voice, like Heartbreaker, Hit Me With Your Best Shot and Love Is A Battlefield. In this sense Benatar was something like a female Meat Loaf and in fact not too far from Bonnie Tyler. But there were also the quiter songs in a more tender voice, like the synth-driven We Live For Love, a pop classic. With 18 tracks, this is a better compilation than Best Shots with its 15 tracks.

Unlike almost any other modern musician, Pat Metheny remains uniquely unpredictable. A new Metheny record could be almost anything as the only musician to have won twelve of his twenty Grammy awards in twelve different categories. His recent recording Road To The Sun caused a sensation in the classical music world for its intricate and emotionally satisfying chamber music compositions. At the same time, its immediate predecessor From This Place was Downbeat magazine’s Jazz Record of the Year as an expansive and timeless large-scale work.

This unusual compilation from the Kool Jazz at Midem Festival combines parts of three separate sets. The Dave Brubeck Quartet with clarinetist Bill Smith, bassist Chris Brubeck and drummer Randy Jones, has the most interesting program, utilizing an electronic delay along with Smith's clarinet to add a new touch to "Lover Man," offering an energetic version of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and introducing a recent work by Brubeck, the very swinging "Ol' Bill Basie" which showcases some fine playing by the leader and some choice bass trombone by son Chris. Guitarist Pat Metheny joins the Heath Brothers for "Move To The Groove; " Metheny's bluesy guitar and Jimmy Heath's soulful tenor sax work well together. B. B. King's set is at best average and an odd choice to include on what is predominantly a jazz record.

After 2023's Dream Box, Pat Metheny embarked on a long solo tour, during which he experimented with a new guitar built for him by luthier Linda Manzer. The custom baritone utilized nylon strings, sourced from an Argentinian company after an exhaustive search, to get the tone Metheny desired for his idiosyncratic tuning. The striking difference in sound sparked an epiphany that he says, "instantly peeled open a whole new range of possibilities …. this guitar allows me to go deep … to a place that I maybe have never quite gotten to before." Metheny has always been an expressive and emotional player, but an even deeper resonance echoes across the beautifully recorded MoonDial, a collection of originals and carefully chosen covers. The album-defining, title-track opener has his trademark insistent drive and innate melodicism.

Metheny has always been an expressive and emotional player, but an even deeper resonance echoes across the beautifully recorded MoonDial, a collection of originals and carefully chosen covers. The album-defining, title-track opener has his trademark insistent drive and innate melodicism. The song slowly builds, tempos fluctuating around a central theme—all along taking advantage of the baritone guitar's unique fullness. A hushed, graceful ending brings this number to a close. His guitar sounds exquisite on the delicate melody of the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere." Metheny vigorously strums a skeletal melody on "Shōga," the only track to raise the volume and tempos, and effectively combines "Everything Happens to Me," (first recorded by Frank Sinatra in the 1940s) and Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" from West Side Story into a leisurely paced mash-up. With his fertile imagination and new instrument, Metheny even brings novel dimensions to "Londonderry Air," the traditional Irish melody on which "Danny Boy" is based. With MoonDial, Pat Metheny has expanded the scope of his solo sound.
