With the support of the American State Department, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including new members Joe Morello and Eugene Wright, began a major tour of Europe early in 1958.

The Allmusic review states "This may have been Creed Taylor's most ambitious single project… Thankfully the musicmaking lives up to the billing. Everything that gave CTI its distinctive sound and identity is here – the classical adaptations, elaborate orchestrations and structuring, pop-tune covers, plenty of room for the star soloists to stretch out in a combo format… Giant Box still ranks as a sensational coup and a reminder of how potent CTI was at its peak".

Joseph Albert Morello (July 17, 1928 – March 12, 2011) was an American jazz drummer best known for serving as the drummer for pianist Dave Brubeck, as part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, from 1957 to 1972, including during the quartet's "classic lineup" from 1958 to 1968, which also included alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and bassist Eugene Wright.

In 1967 The Dave Brubeck Quartet suddenly became a Trio for this Vienna concert when, after the previous evening's concert in Hamburg, Paul Desmond went out and never made his plane to Austria. While Paul's lyricism was missed, Dave, Gene, and Joe's playing was incredibly strong, high energy & swinging.

Chet Baker began his comeback after five years of musical inactivity with this excellent CTI date. Highlights include "Autumn Leaves", "Tangerine", and "With a Song in My Heart". Altoist Paul Desmond is a major asset on two songs and the occasional strings give variety to this fine session.
