Böhm was reported to have told the Wiener Philharmoniker towards the end of his life "I loved you as one can only love a woman". Listening to this boxset, capturing the Concertgebouworkest at the peak of its powers (between 1935 and June 1941), still at a commendable level (between July 1941 and 1944) before having to rebuild from the ashes of war (1945 to 1947) to finally come back to the highest level (1949-1950), the careful auditor has history in the making unfolding with its drama, its joys, but essentially its incommensurable beauty.

Here is another fabulous collection from Mercury, all important recordings by one of the greatest of all organists. Marcel Dupré, born in Normandy 1888. He had a distinctive career, recognized as a master of his instrument, and as a composer and pedagogue. He gave thousands of concerts in the United States, Canada, Europe and often performed the complete organ works of Bach from memory. Considered to be the "Paganini of the Organ," his career flourished and we are fortunate he made many recordings in stereo.

By temperament Roussel was predominantly a classicist. While his early work was strongly influenced by impressionism in music, he eventually arrived at a personal style which was more formal in design, with a strong rhythmic drive, and with a more distinct affinity for functional tonality than is found in the work of his more famous contemporaries Debussy, Ravel, Satie, and Stravinsky. Roussel's training at the Schola Cantorum, with its emphasis on rigorous academic models such as Palestrina and Bach, left its mark on his mature style, which is characterized by contrapuntal textures.

Quelle mouche teutonne a donc piqué Emmanuel Chabrier ?

The History of Mercury Living Presence. The year was 1950. The record industry was recovering from the 'battle of the speeds', which pitted RCA Victor, with its 45-rpm disc, against Columbia Records, inventor of the microgroove long-playing record. (The 78-rpm shellac disc had just suffered a swift demise.) In the aftermath of the protracted struggle, the unexpected happened. Both sides won: the 45-rpm became the preferred speed for popular music at the time and the LP was adopted as the industry standard for classics and other 'long-playing' programs.

Through all of its trials and tribulations, the DSO has maintained a consistently high level of musicianship and technical skill, directly representative of the many distinguished conductors who have directed the group.

From the notes: "Madame Darré's musical style changed over the years, as we can trace in this selection of her recordings made between the ages of 17 and 42.. In her last New York recitals in the early 1980's, she was no longer the fire-eating virtuoso, and molded cantilena with an exquisite soft legato, always charged with unexpected colors, turns of phrase, or important bass voice-leadings. Nevertheless, one of her trademarks, an infectious sense of rhythm, remained the same. … Her personal style was striking and colorful. She strode on stage like an athlete and the dancer she had been, resplendently gowned in extravagant hues that offset her hair. (At least once, she wore a slightly shocking formal miniskirt for an important New York recital!) Perhaps, if she considered it warm, she'd fling her jacket to the side of the stage before plunging without any fuss into the performance. Her audiences seemed to sense that she was an artist who loved to play" Notes by Gregor Benko

UK collection that is comprised of musical selections from Kubrick's central masterpieces, complimented by pieces which the director used as 'temp tracks' during the production and by all accounts with every intention of using these in the film, only to decide to replace them late on. In 2001, the scherzo from Felix Mendelssohn's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' (used for scenes of weightlessness) and Vaughan Williams 'Antarctica Suite' (for the Stargate effects and scenes on the moon) were both used in preview showings of the film before being discarded. While on Eyes Wide Shut, Wagner's 'Lieder I'm Triebhaus' ('In the Greenhouse') from Wesendonck Lieder was a significant theme in the production for more than a year before being replaced. We have also assembled the complete vintage ballroom music from The Shining. The final movement from Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique', with it's epic use of the chant from the Roman Catholic Requiem mass, the 'Dies Irae', and a Sibelius piece, 'Valse Triste'. Both were important to the evolution of the film. Finally, as a young man, Stanley Kubrick fell in love with Sergi Prokofiev's score for the Sergei Eisenstein's first sound film, Alexander Nevsky. He played it to death, and it would inspire him later in his own use of dramatic music. From the scintillating recording by Fritz Reiner with the Chicago SO, we include the movement, 'Battle On the Ice'.
