To the surrealism of Quentin Tarantino films, second-hand records and old Westerns… To the vibe of lava lamps and Photoshopped boogaloo… To a 1960s that is as unfocused as the 1960s you see on YouTube…Bruut! swings hard. Bruut! balances the colourful with the unpolished, and the danceable with the listenable. In short: Bruut! is all about super jazz.

Pee Wee Ellis Associated Acts: James Brown, Van Morrison Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion. Legendary Blue Note pianist Horace Parlan teams up with Tenor Sax maestro Pee Wee Ellis on a wonderful, but difficult to get hold of, recording. At the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1999 Pee Wee and Horace showcased the albumn and, although judged a resounding success, since then distribution has been poor. The melodic piano of Horace is complimented by the deep toned, breathy sax of Pee Wee on standards such as "crazy" & "someone to watch over me" as well as a number of own compositions, topped and tailed by two wonderful versions, by Mr Ellis on his own, of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz".

Florida guitar player Willie Lomax has a reverent appreciation for the history of the blues, and it shows on his debut release from his own Big Boss Records. Featuring the Delta rhythms of the great Sam Carr on drums, and solid vocals from James Peterson, Give Me Back My Teeth has a lean, gritty sound that combines Southern juke joint rawness with uptown Chicago blues to produce an album that is solid as bedrock. Highlights include the opener, "Where I've Been," the wise and wistful "Way a Tree Falls," the gutbucket "Razorback," and the impressive 11-minute suite "Blues for Jackie Robinson," which manages to be experimental without being disruptive to the overall tone and feel of the album. Lomax would add Shawn Brown on vocals for his next two albums, and move on to more Memphis soul territory, but this debut shows an impressive writer and player with a clear vision for what contemporary blues can be.

An Incredible Experience of Freedom June 6, 2024, will mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings. It's also the day the Grammy© nominated pianist Monty Alexander turns 80. A highly symbolic historical concordance which the great musician naturally embraces, since the name he was given pays homage to General Montgomery, the famous liberator. The album D-Day is the fruit of intertwining friendships and artistic collusion often observed between Monty Alexander, the French touring agency V.O Music, and the label PeeWee! It contains a number of iconic compositions written in wartime and original tracks: *I'll Never Smile Again, written in 1939, a Frank Sinatra hit throughout the Second World War. *Smile, written by Charlie Chaplin for his film Modern Times in 1936: Smile, though your heart is aching, Smile, even though it's breaking, When there are clouds in the sky, You'll get by. *D-Day (Just Wait), Why (that's why), River of Peace, Restoration… are Alexander's compositions inspired by the conflict and its extraordinary ending.

Pee Wee Crayton was a blues guitarist, singer and songwriter who was one of the leading figures of the West Coast blues school during the post-war decades. He was one of several blues artists who made the move from Texas to California in the Depression, and inevitably he became an associate of the pioneer of the West Coast style T-Bone Walker, but although Crayton was undoubtedly influenced by him, he developed a highly distinctive sound, playing in an aggressive style which encompassed some daring technical innovations, as well as having a somewhat contrasting smooth vocal style. Over the years, he recorded for a number of labels, scoring his biggest successes in his early years with the Modern label, as he reached the R&B Top 5 with Blues After Hours, Texas Hop and I Love You So.
