This record is the second part of both the Sonatas and Partitas, recorded by Linus Roth. Not only did Roth’s teachers and the interpretations of great violinists have a huge influence on how he plays Bach, but also his preoccupation with the original text and with what is known as historically informed performance practice, in particular the experience of playing with the type of convex Baroque bow that was used in Bach’s time. Linus Roth, who received the ECHO KLASSIK Award as 'Best Newcomer' 2006 for his début album on the label EMI, was awarded his second ECHO award in 2017 for his recording of the violin concertos by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky with the London Symphony Orchestra under Thomas Sanderling. Linus Roth has made a name for himself internationally, not just with his acclaimed work in core repertoire, but also with his discovery / rediscovery of works that have undeservedly fallen into oblivion.

The first of two discs by Pieter Wispelwey that will be released in 2023 is a re-assembling of previously released recordings of works by Schubert. This short series entitled In Memoriam is inspired by a grave loss Pieter suffered recently. The disc includes Schubert's masterpieces for violin and piano, transcribed for cello and the most famous Trockne Blumen, originally for flute. To accompany Pieter on piano is his faithful musical companion Paolo Giacometti. "Half a year before my sixtieth birthday my family and I suffered a massive, tragic blow, when my son, Dorian, died. While still shaken to my foundations, a way forward seems to me to be to allow music to play a constructive and healing role. So I have recorded Bach's Fifth Suite and Kodaly's Solosonata to form the Scordatura Album for an October In Memoriam II release.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonatas with Varied Reprises (comp. 1758-9, publ. 1760) constituted a bold experiment. Spelling out every repeat, Bach applies to each the art of variation. Starting off as a service ("play this and you'll sound as if you're improvising"), the opus ends up a masterclass in variation. Tom Beghin, playing his own beloved clavichord, enacts the role of the keyboardist- composer who repeats himself, while never saying the same thing twice.

Few composers can be said to be 'citizens of nowhere' and yet, exactly this moniker is appropriate for Mieczyslaw Weinberg. He was born and raised in Poland to a Jewish family, but for complex reasons spent the majority of his life in Soviet Russia. He had a prolific output (over 150 opus-numbered works, and more besides), but never reached international fame during his lifetime. Since his death in 1996, that has all changed. His powerful music speaks to generations, made all the more powerful by his emotive biography.

Violinist Linus Roth began studying music early in childhood, and became a student of Nicolas Chumachenco at the Music Academy of Freiburg at the age of 12. He pursued music studies in Lübeck, where he studied with Zakhar Bron, and later worked with Ana Chumachenco in Zürich and Munich. Roth was strongly influenced by Salvatore Accardo, Miriam Fried, and Josef Rissin, and a scholarship from Anne-Sophie Mutter's foundation enabled him to complete his education. Roth has performed as a concerto soloist with the Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra della Toscana, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. He has also performed with the Bruckner Orchester Linz, the Orquesta de Cordoba, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn, among several others. He has played chamber music with many artists, including Nicolas Altstaedt, Julius Berger, Gautier Capuçon, Kim Kashkashian, Albrecht Mayer, Nils Mönkemeyer, Jan Vogler, and frequent accompanist José Gallardo. Roth is the professor of violin at the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum of the University of Augsburg. He has recorded for Challenge Classics, CPO, and EMI Classics.
