The figure of Thomas "Fats" Waller survived as his work : the image of the man with his bowler hat, his jovial air and his big cigars went around the world, not to mention that he was a fantastic pianist of the first hour of jazz. The Harlem native (1904), gifted with the keyboard, was a prolific composer whose repertoire includes about 700 themes including the classics "Honeysuckle Rose" and "aint'misbehavin' ". Solo or as a leader of Fats Waller & His Rhythm, The Pianist accumulated successes for OKeh, Bluebird or Victor, toured Europe and recorded a London Suite on site (1939), created the musical Early to Bed (1941) at Carnegie Hall in New York and starred in the film Stormy Weather in 1943. The obese jazzman, bulimic of life, died on December 15, 1943, during a journey that took him home. His work has greatly marked the history of jazz.
