When a complex arrangement of music for a band is distilled down to a single instrument, that’s when the strength of the song’s structure, the essential beauty of its melody and harmony, is fully revealed. We know the basic building blocks of Pat Metheny’s compositions are solid and often sublime, so it’s great to be reminded of them. Peo Alfonsi, the Sardinian who first came to international attention when Al Di Meola chose to pay in a duo with him and then incorporated him into his New World Sinfonia, plays an acoustic guitar and here treats 13 of Metheny’s tunes to his own interpretations.

In 2008 the world famous guitarist, Al DiMeola and the virtuoso Hungarian flute player, Eszter Horgas played together in Hungary to perform the remake of Bizet's "Carmen." The concert was recorded and leadto a remarkable album called "He & Carmen." The music combines classical, Latin and jazz elements to create a unique, atmospheric and passionate concert. The guitar and the flute, two very exciting instruments make a beautiful pair. The variety of the musicians, the American Al DiMeola, the Cuban Gumbi Ortiz, the Italian Peo Alfonsi, the Hungarian Eszter Horgas and the others made the performance even more original, bringing their own culture, adding their own personality to create a truly unique album.

Now that the whole Return to Forever reunion experience is in his rearview mirror (and unlikely to be repeated ever again), guitar star Al Di Meola is pursuing his own musical vision with newfound conviction via his World Sinfonia. Essentially an acoustic ensemble featuring Fausto Beccalossi on accordion and Di Meola’s longtime collaborator Gumbi Ortiz on cajon and assorted hand percussion, along with second guitarist Peo Alfonsi, bassist Victor Miranda and drummer Peter Kaszas, this edition of the World Sinfonia has developed a tightly knit chemistry through frequent touring. This limited-edition release, the first in a series of live recordings being sold initially at World Sinfonia gigs, documents their easy rapport in concerts held in Seattle, San Francisco and Istanbul.
