By the time RCA Records and producer Felton Jarvis arrived to start recording some of his shows on August 21, 1969, Elvis Presley had already conquered Las Vegas. As another piece of his comeback that started with the 1968 ELVIS television special and continued with his first Memphis recordings since the mid-1950s, Elvis had been performing to sold-out crowds in the newly-opened International Hotel's main showroom since July 31. With a grueling two-shows-a-night, seven-days-a-week, schedule, Elvis had performed over 40 triumphant concerts in just three weeks. He was starting the last week of an engagement that, outside of four shows for small studio audiences during his TV special, represented his first live concerts in nearly nine years.

R.I.P. David Bowie, music’s greatest innovator has died at age of 69.
The first in a series of career-spanning comprehensive box sets, Five Years 1969-1973 chronicles the beginning of David Bowie's legend by boxing all of his officially released music during those early years. This amounts to six studio albums – 1969's David Bowie (aka Space Oddity); 1970's The Man Who Sold the World; 1971's Hunky Dory; 1972's The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars; Aladdin Sane, and Pin Ups (both from 1973); a pair of live albums (Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack and Live in Santa Monica '72, both released long after these five years) and a two-CD collection of non-LP tracks called Re:Call, plus Ken Scott's 2003 mix of Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust. That list suggests how "officially released" is a guideline that's easily bent.

"Surrender" is a 1971 album by Diana Ross. It was her 3rd solo LP for the Motown label. It reached #56 in the USA (#10 R&B) and sold over 200,000 copies. The album would be Ross' final studio album until the "Touch Me in the Morning" LP two years later. In the interim between the albums, Ross achieved Motown's goal of becoming a star thanks to her starring role in the 1972 Billie Holiday biopic "Lady Sings the Blues". Following the massive success of the #1 single "I'm Still Waiting" in the UK, "Surrender" was reissued under that title, and the hit single was added to the track listing. Another hit on the album was "Remember Me", which reached the top 20 in the US (where it sold over 500,000 copies) as well as the Top 10 in the UK. The album charted at #56 in America and #10 in the UK, earning a Silver disc for UK sales in excess of 60,000 copies.
