One of Jamaica's most beloved vocalists who was as pertinent in dancehalls as he was in bedrooms, Gregory Isaacs' career stretched over 30 years. From the heady days of reggae through lovers rock, a genre he virtually invented, his talent reached into the modern age. Born in the Fletcher's Land area of Kingston, Jamaica, on July 15, 1951, Isaacs arrived in the music business via the talent show circuit, a tried and true formula for many of the island's budding singing stars. Byron Lee was the first in the industry to spot his talent and brought him and Winston Sinclair into the studio to record the duet "Another Heartbreak" in 1968. Sadly, it went nowhere, and Isaacs decided to try his fortunes with a new vocal trio, the Concords.

Two CD set. First CD release of breakthrough debut album outside Japan. Includes numerous major Jamaican hits from 1973/4. After making his recording debut in the late 60s, Gregory Isaacs recorded for a number of leading Jamaican record producers without ever achieving significant sustained success. His fortunes changed dramatically early in 1974, however, after he began collaborating with Alvin 'G. G. ' Ranglin, who over the previous six years had established a reputation as one of the island's most respected hit-makers. The partnership immediately paid dividends with the release of the singer's smash hit, 'Love Is Overdue', the popularity of which spurred Ranglin to record have the singer record his hugely popular debut long player. The LP provides the focus of this 2CD set, which also includes the remainder of Isaacs's recordings with Ranglin from the period, along with the very best of the producer's output from 1973, featured on disc 2. With 14 tracks unavailable on any format since their original release, this is a crucial collection for fans of the Cool Ruler and classic early 70s reggae sounds. This recording from jazz vocalist Gregory Porter, produced by Kamau Kenyatta, is billed as a program of songs based on themes of love and protest. Whether pining, yearning, or speaking out against injustice, Porter's voice is clearly understood in his attempt to tell you how he feels emotionally. While stylistically similar to the late Gregory Hines, Porter phrases like Stevie Wonder and enunciates the lyrics similar to Kurt Elling, while also incorporating techniques of singers like Jimmy Witherspoon and Joe Williams. Porter wrote most of the material, but also borrows from the show tune legacy, or modernists like Wayne Shorter. Many of these tracks feature him only with pianist Chip Crawford in preludes or complete duets, and they are introspective, as you might expect. Then there's the ode to riot-stricken Detroit "1960 What?," a powerful and deep piece that reminds the world what happened to the once industrial capital of the world
