X-Plane contains subsonic and supersonic flight dynamics, allowing users to predict the flight characteristics of the slowest aircraft to the fastest. Scenery is also available for Mars thanks to the Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter, which mapped that planet's elevation. On Earth, users can land at any of over 33,000 airports or test their mettle on aircraft carriers, oil rigs, frigates (which pitch and roll with the waves), or helipads atop buildings. They can also realistically model the flight of remote controlled model aircraft, air-launch in an X-15 or Space Ship One from the mother ship, fly re-entries into Earth's atmosphere in the Space Shuttle, fly with friends over the Internet or a LAN, drop water on forest fires, or shoot approaches to aircraft carriers at night in stormy weather and rough water conditions in a damaged F-4. The situations that can be simulated are incredible!

Your mission as a glider pilot is pretty clear: Watch the wind and the slope of the terrain carefully to hold inside the UPWARD-MOVING areas of air, using the lift of the air flowing UP the mountain-slope to hold you aloft! If you set a good 25-knot wind, and then fly along the WINDWARD side of a nice steep mountain, then you can get a really-nice free elevator ride to 10,000 feet in the right flying regions! This is called RIDGE LIFT.

Though the iPhone and iPod touch have been graced with a spectacular flight simulator in the form of X-Plane 9, “fun” flying games have been comparatively few and far between on this platform. This week saw the release of two separate titles that aim not for realism but rather to let players enjoy flying under different conditions: the first, in commercial and military airplanes, and the second, in military helicopters.Makayama Media is the airplane version, giving you the ability to fly a Boeing 747, an Airbus A319, a Hercules C130 and a Lockheed-Martin F-16. Makayama’s formula is to drop you into a vehicle in the middle of an urban environment, give you an altimeter and speedometer, and tell you to achieve certain objectives: for instance, level one has you fly a plane under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Alcatraz such that your wing tip touches a lighthouse, and then to a landing at the San Francisco Airport.

This model is very well done and it is nice to see Carenado putting in more modern avionics. The exterior model is very accurate and one of the best exteriors on a single engine piston general aviation airplane for X-Plane.
