Pickin' Up the Pieces is the debut album by country rock band Poco, released in 1969. It was one of the earliest examples of the emerging genre of country rock. Several of the songs here date back to Richie Furay's days in Buffalo Springfield. In his Allmusic review, music critic Bruce Eder called the album a "startlingly great record, as accomplished as any of Buffalo Springfield's releases, and also reminiscent of the Beatles and the Byrds".

Dating from 1974, this 2-on-1 from country rock's most under-appreciated band followed the departure of founder Richie Furay, Poco by this point dominated by Paul Cotton. Both albums - Vocalion has chosen not to put them in chronological order - were filled with a mix of hard-driving rockers and wistful ballads, the best moments belonging to Timothy B Schmit, who would soon leave to join The Eagles. This SACD offers the original quadraphonic mix as well as stereo, and the 4-channel format's spatial oddities are less intrusive than one might imagine. A welcome reissue, especially given the 44-year gap since the quad mix was available.

Known for their country-rock ease and light harmonies, Poco netted two of the finest soft rock tunes of the late '70s in "Crazy Love" and "Heart of the Night," which highlight Crazy Loving, one of the more accessible compilations from this California band. After these tracks, the rest of this package takes minor hits from rather lackluster albums such as Blue and Gray, Under the Gun, and Cowboys and Englishmen, gradually losing interest along the way. Although the group's countrified feel wraps itself tightly around songs like "Too Many Nights Too Long," "Indian Summer," and the instrumental "Ashes/Feudin," Poco's occasional knack for a catchy hook or a sincere lyric fails to rise to the top on most of these cuts.

Poco are a Southern California country rock band originally formed by Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Rusty Young. Formed following the demise of The Buffalo Springfield in 1968, Poco was part of the first wave of the West Coast country rock genre. The title of their first album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, is reputedly a reference to the break-up of The Buffalo Springfield.

Although Indian Summer wasn't the commercial breakthrough Poco had hoped for (it would come a year later with Legend), there's nothing inherently bad here.
