Deep-Sea Mining and the Water Column: Advances, Monitoring and Related Issues

Deep-Sea Mining and the Water Column: Advances, Monitoring and Related Issues by Rahul Sharma
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 600 Pages | ISBN : 3031590597 | 176.5 MB

This book focuses on general issues of deep-sea mining for seafloor mineral deposits, as well as the scientific, technical, legal and policy issues related to impacts on the water column. The topic is a growing area of significance due to the ongoing conversations on this issue in the world community, in view of the large-scale consequences resulting from operations of different components of deep-sea mining systems. The chapters are divided in five sections, and are contributed by highly acclaimed scientists, technologists, lawyers and administrators who have decades of experience working on these topics. The information compiled in the book is expected to serve as an important reference for all stakeholders including researchers, contractors, mining companies, regulators and NGOs involved in deep-sea mining and marine environmental conservation.
Disaster Management in the Complex Himalayan Terrains: Natural Hazard Management, Methodologies and Policy Implications

Disaster Management in the Complex Himalayan Terrains: Natural Hazard Management, Methodologies and Policy Implications by Shruti Kanga
English | PDF | 2022 | 186 Pages | ISBN : 3030893073 | 7.6 MB

South Asia, harboring the complex Himalayan terrains, has over one-fifth of the world’s population and is recognized as the most hazard-prone region of the world. The exponential increase in population with the consequent pressure on natural resources and continued high rates of poverty and food insecurity also makes this region the most vulnerable region to hazards in the world as far as the impacts of climate change are concerned.

In the Shadow of the Member States: Policy-Making Agency by the ASEAN Secretariat and Dialogue Partners

In the Shadow of the Member States: Policy-Making Agency by the ASEAN Secretariat and Dialogue Partners by Lukas Maximilian Müller
English | PDF,EPUB | 2023 | 196 Pages | ISBN : 9811993858 | 4.5 MB

This book provides practice-oriented insights into the agency of two previously underestimated actors in Southeast Asian regionalism: the ASEAN Secretariat and ASEAN’s dialog partners. In doing so, it offers an inside view of the policymaking processes in the ASEAN Political-Security and the ASEAN Economic Community, analyzing the interplay and agency by both actors in agenda setting, formulation, decision-making, implementation, and monitoring. Drawing on a trove of novel data, including never-before analyzed sources and numerous interviews with ASEAN insiders, the book showcases a number of concrete cases of policymaking, including competition and counterterrorism policies. The chapters focusing on the ASEAN Secretariat address aspects related to institutional autonomy, capacity, and reforms within the bureaucracy. In the chapters on ASEAN's dialog partners, the book provides insights into the bilateral management of institutional support programs, as well as the impacts of support on ASEAN's policymaking processes.

Computer Intrusion Detection and Network Monitoring: A Statistical Viewpoint

Computer Intrusion Detection and Network Monitoring: A Statistical Viewpoint by David J. Marchette

In the fall of 1999, I was asked to teach a course on computer intrusion detection for the Department of Mathematical Sciences of The Johns Hopkins University. That course was the genesis of this book. I had been working in the field for several years at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, in Dahlgren, Virginia, under the auspices of the SHADOW program, with some funding by the Office of Naval Research. In designing the class, I was concerned both with giving an overview of the basic problems in computer security, and with providing information that was of interest to a department of mathematicians. Thus, the focus of the course was to be more on methods for modeling and detecting intrusions rather than one on how to secure one's computer against intrusions. The first task was to find a book from which to teach. I was familiar with several books on the subject, but they were all at either a high level, focusing more on the political and policy aspects of the problem, or were written for security analysts, with little to interest a mathematician. I wanted to cover material that would appeal to the faculty members of the department, some of whom ended up sitting in on the course, as well as providing some interesting problems for students. None of the books on the market at the time had an adequate discussion of mathematical issues related to intrusion detection.
