101 Strings Orchestra An easy-listening icon, the 101 Strings series of orchestral versions of pop standards was launched in the late '50s and would go on to sell over 50 million copies. The series' heyday was in the '60s, but the brand soldiers on, reissuing classic titles and recombining old material into compilations with contemporary themes like Easy Listening: Relax & Spa. Younger listeners may find the smooth, blissed-out arrangements unbelievably kitschy, which isn't far off target: even in its prime, the series also released records by exotica pioneer Les Baxter.

Waltz Darling was a shock to me. I was surprised by how good the album was. Jeff Beck and Bootsy Collins recreate Blue Danube by setting it to pop music. Changing classical music into pop takes some work but Bootsy and his orchestra put in the work. The vocals and music are top notch. Malcolm McLaren has been working hard on trying to become a pop star. After latching on to the punk fad, he switched to the hip-hop then to classical themes. Call him a fink or a snake, but McLaren knows what's hot or soon to be big. He's had a very active music career.

Best Selection captures great moments of Yellow Magic Orchestra during their golden period, between 1978 and 1981. The record is also a good way to discover the band as it is mainly composed of two parts: the first one is consecrated to punchy synth pop tracks from their first albums of the 70s, whereas the second part is dedicated to their darker 80s' cold wave pieces.

Xanadu [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] Review by Doug Stone
Hollywood never learns. Hot on the heels of box-office failures Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Can't Stop the Music, comes the roller-skating Olivia Newton John in Xanadu. This soundtrack is fluff stuff to be sure, but some pearls float amongst the mire. Lead-off "Magic" remains a fine single. "Suddenly," a duet ONJ ekes out with British luminary Cliff Richard, seems better than most love themes. The sudden appearance of the Tubes almost saves the doomed swing/rock hybrid "Dancin," but the two styles should never meet. The second half glows from the Electric Light Orchestra, soaring at its commercial height, escaping this crippling fairy tale fairly untarnished with three more hit bits: "I'm Alive," "All Over the World," and the Olivia Neutron Bomb showcase title track. "Don't Walk Away" and "The Fall" stand as two of Jeff Lynne's finest, thus the flip nukes the front which should stay stuck to the theater floor. Listening to this soundtrack may beat watching the actual film, but know that if you didn't dig Xanadu when it came out, the platter gains nothing through time.
