Brighton-based performer and composer Poppy Ackroyd returns this with her fourth full-length album 'Pause'. Written during the pandemic and shortly after the birth of her first child, the title refers to the feeling of normal life being temporarily put on hold.
The interplay between the amplified harpsichord and electric guitar in this gem of a psychedelic group is worth the price of admission alone. There is no air between the tracks so a seamless dance spins hypnotically for 38 minutes through a variety of moods and tempos. Chord progressions and musical structure sound a wee bit simplistic and dated on this first outing, but nothing grates and the vocals are silky and soothing. The musicianship is excellent though slightly constrained in the studio, compared to their live concerts.
On February 2nd 2018, Poppy Ackroyd releases her first full-length album with One Little Indian Records, Resolve. A classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts).
