The Breakaways were the premier providers of female backing vocals for mid-'60s British pop, working closely with Tony Hatch backing his stable of singers as well as with most of the big names like Burt Bacharach, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Jackie DeShannon, Joe Meek, Shel Talmy, and Andrew Loog Oldham. It might be easier to list who they didn't work with! They were the U.K. equivalent of the Blossoms or the Sweet Inspirations in the U.S. Like those bands, the Breakaways attempted to make it as artists in their own right but never made much of an impact. On this collection there are a handful of excellent singles released under the Breakaways name, but the majority of the disc features them as backup singers to artists like Jackie Trent, Petula Clark, Jimmy Justice, and Tony Jackson. The closest thing the group had to a hit was the stomping "That's How It Goes," which marries their brash unison vocals to a Wall of Sound production and a glorious hook.

The Dad is 41. He has been to a record shop. He has re-bought all the music he liked when he was young but on the most inconvenient possible format. He also asked the 22-year old behind the counter what new records were good. He bought everything she recommended because she had nice hair. He hates all the new records, but not as much as he hates himself. From the makers of the hugely successful Ladybird book series ‘How It Works’, comes the very first companion album! Just in time for Father’s Day! ‘How It Works’ – The Dad – The Album boasts a massive 60 tracks across 3CDs. The album features a raft of iconic artists and timeless tracks including Foreigner, Survivor, Kiss, ZZ Top, Journey, REO Speedwagon and much more.

The reunion between pianist John Taylor, singer Norma Winstone and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler finds Azimuth (which was always a part-time group) performing fairly spacy improvisations. All of the selections are group originals (mostly by Taylor), except for Bobo Stenson's "Mindiatyr" and an almost unrecognizable reshaping of "How Deep Is the Ocean." Taylor sometimes recalls Keith Jarrett, while Wheeler comes across as the most conventional of the three participants, and Winstone's voice keeps the music from getting too comfortable or predictable. Interesting but not essential music from three adventurous spirits.
