Campra was the most important opera composer between Lully and Rameau. The success of Europe Galante in 1697 is a tribute to this founding work of the Opera-Ballet, mixing dance and opera in the opulent divertissements. Campra takes the spectator on a voyage into the amorous nations of Europe. France moves to the rhythm of the genteel heartbeat of the shepherds and the shepherdesses, Italy refined but jealous and violent and finally the Sultan who has to soothe the criminal bitterness of the Sultana, who has been ousted by a beautiful slave… Spicy musical banter during the reign of Louis XIV, recovered by Les Nouveaux Caracteres directed by Sebastien d'Herin.

Following an initial reconstruction on disc in 2015, the Ballet Royal de la Nuit enjoyed a triumphal modern premiere at the Théâtre de Caen in November 2017. That staged version, presented in this outstanding box set, at last includes the entire musical score (twenty-seven additional dances). The meticulous reconstitution of Sébastien Daucé, the incomparable poetry of Francesca Lattuada, an oneiric universe featuring more than 120 costumes designed by Olivier Charpentier, all contribute to an incredible enchantment further enhanced by the exploits of virtuoso jugglers and circus artists. In this ballet, a masterly achievement from every point of view, the spell remains unbroken from first note to last.

The secular work of this great master of the French XVII Century – one of the great singers and pedagogues of his time was known to us, each one of us having performed many times his wonderful court airs.

When spirits are low, the music of Jacques-Martin Hotteterre (1674-1763) is sure to raise them. Now the most celebrated member of a distinguished family of flute makers and players, he paid his way into the French royal court through his father’s well-rewarded success, and became ‘grand hautbois du roy’. In turn he passed the post on to his son, who married the daughter of the organist Balbastre.

The church bells that he heard aged four, walking in the streets of Zurich with his parents, were the point of departure for the young Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi who still remembers this moment as a shock that violently brought home the power of music. The sonic beauty and harmonic richness in the tolling of the bells set something off in his unconscious, sparking a lifelong quest for the timbres and sonorities that he is so deft at bringing to life on his piano. At the age of five, he tried to reproduce the sound of the bells on a little toy piano; at twelve, he played Grieg's Concerto in A Minor and started to perform in public. But two years later he became aware of the limits of his technical abilities and also of the strange tensions wracking his body.

Each appearance of Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset leaves an unforgettable memory with those who have had the good fortune to hear them commune on stage. Long-standing partners, they now join together for the first time on disc for a composer they worship: the mysterious Antoine Forqueray. Born in 1672 in Paris, he was, with Marin Marais, one of the greatest gambists of all time. Famed for his virtuosic improvisations, he published none of his 300-odd pieces and died in 1745 in Mantes where he had moved in 1731, after having suffered serious financial setbacks, especially in the course of Law’s bankruptcy. Aside from a few handwritten pieces copied in the collections of other composers, Forqueray’s pieces have been lost.

This recording presents for the first time the complete works of the Forqueray family – music that is powerful, virtuosic, fascinating, that touches our innermost being – and combines harpsichord pieces with pieces for viola da gamba and basso continuo. It includes the four early pieces by Antoine Forqueray from the Recueil de pieces de violle avec la basse tiré des meilleurs autheurs, and our transcription for two harpsichords of the pieces for three viols found in the Lille Manuscript, as a nod to the family practice of the Forquerays (transcription was a very widespread practice at the time).

Following their interpretation distinguished by the criticism of the unknown Apothéoses, and Nations of François Couperin, the Shadows deliver a new reading of his sacred heritage. The Lessons of Darkness, or Lamentations published in 1714, testify to Couperin's attachment to the sacred, to text and to vocality. One can recognize in his instrumental music a mastery of rhythms, and supports, just as he would place each note on a given text. It is therefore with delight that we discover this vocal legacy to prosody as studied as natural.

Cyprien Katsaris is inquisitive as usual: here he plays refined piano transcriptions by Karol Penson, a famous physicist. When Cyprien Katsaris came across Karol A. Penson's magnificent transcriptions he was immediately taken by the refinement that he brought to these reworkings for the piano. A genuine discovery thanks to a transcriber who is also a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Paris VI and winner of the Franco-German Alexander von Humboldt Prize. Cyprien Katsaris is a French-Cypriot virtuoso pianist, teacher and composer.
