Sabine Devieilhe, the young French lyric-coloratura soprano, is a singer “whose upper register, like her virtuosity, appears limitless, while her verbal sense and dramatic engagement are breathtaking”. A prizewinner in the 2013 Victoires de la Musique Classique, France’s equivalent of the Grammys, she has recorded a ravishing programme of excerpts from operas by Rameau with conductor Alexis Kossenko and his ensemble Les Ambassadeurs.

Roberto Alagna is the kind of ‘opera singer’ who can sing for all with such infectious pleasure that all we can do is sit back and enjoy. And so happy are we to listen to him that there’s only one thing we feel we should say to him: thank you. This collection features aria from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Gounoud, Massenet, Bizet, Berlioz, Offenbach and Bernstein.

Richard Leech has sung his Raoul to enthusiastic audiences in Berlin and elsewhere, and it is good to hear a voice which has such a clean ring to it, evenly produced and tastefully directed (even if not invariably observing Meyerbeer's detailed instructions). The Valentine is Francoise Pollet, an exceptional singer (especially among the French) in the sympathetic roundness of her tone, exactly right for a good nine-tenths of the role (the remaining fraction calling for more rejoicing on the high Cs). As Nevers, the excellent Gilles Cachemaille gives a courtly, well-schooled performance. –Gramophone

Giacomo Meyerbeer was one of the most important composers in Paris during the mid-1800s. He is considered the founder of the French Grand Opera and his works dominated the French stage. Meyerbeer changed the face of opera in Paris, and yet, much criticism is directed toward him and much of his music is seldom heard today. This 3-CD set is the first of two volumes, which together honor Meyerbeer and reacquaint the listener with his marvelous music and some very interesting singing. These two volumes contain at least one version of every recorded Meyerbeer excerpt sung by French singers.

The release in 2019 of the vinyl album “Elvis in Paris” marked the 60th anniversary of Elvis’s 1959 visit to the French capital. Elvis had come at a time when the French were discovering two albums, “King Creole” (released at the end of 1958, and quickly reissued in 1959), and “Elvis Gold Records, Volume 2,” which included titles that had gathered multiple gold and platinum awards. In France, these gave rise to singles and “Super 45” discs that added to the huge celebrity that Elvis already enjoyed in France. The impact of those songs was such that almost all of them were adapted and issued in French versions. Here, most often in the form of alternate takes, you can find the titles that appeared on that vinyl album and were accompanied, as a bonus, by three songs of French origin and excerpts from press conferences given by Elvis ; and, an additional bonus, there are ten new alternate takes from the period. French fans have never forgotten that Paris was the only European capital that Elvis chose to visit… and he did so three times!

György Vashegyi’s new recording of Rameau’s Dardanus superbly demonstrates the Dijon-born composer’s genius, but also the mastery which Vashegyi – with his Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir – has acquired in the music of the Late French Baroque. In conjunction with the preparation of a fresh edition for the Rameau Opera Omnia of the May 1744 version of Dardanus (under the aegis of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles), Vashegyi conducts from a score prepared by the composer (and his librettist Leclerc de La Bruère) following the work’s rejection by Paris Opéra audiences in 1739, with the intention of reinforcing the tragédie’s dramatic action.

John Eliot Gardiner has proved himself a doughty champion of the later French Baroque, cultivating credible performing methods and unearthing undeservedly neglected repertoire. … "Les Boreades" recorded in 1982. Viewed by many as one of the greatest of Rameau's operas, the score is both dramatically effective and a riot of orchestral colour. Gardiner conducts with a real feeling for the way in which instrumental timbre underpins the drama, while in a strong cast Philip Langridge is both stylish and superbly theatrical as Abaris.
