This album, the group's third, was where they showed just how far their talents extended across the musical landscape, from blues to R&B to classical rock. In contrast to their hastily recorded debut, or its successor, done to stretch their performance and composition range, A Salty Dog was recorded in a reasonable amount of time, giving the band a chance to fully develop their ideas…

Despite the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, Procol Harum survived, and this album is ample proof. Fisher was one of the prime architects of the Harum sound, and his work on such classics as "Shine on Brightly" and, of course, "Whiter Shade of Pale" underline that. Procol continued as a four-piece, and it was indeed a good thing that they decided not to replace Fisher. The sound of the band on this album is a bit sparser, but definitely not without dimension and dynamics.

Featuring a line-up of Gary Brooker (vocals, piano), Chris Copping (organ, bass guitar), Robin Trower (guitar, vocals) and BJ Wilson (drums) “Broken Barricades” was issued in June 1971 and was the band’s fifth album. It also saw the departure of Robin Trower from the group a month after its release. An album of diverse styles, “Broken Barricades” featured such fine tracks as ‘Simple Sister’, ‘Memorial Drive’, ‘Luskus Delph’, ‘Song for a Dreamer’, ‘Power Failure’ and the album’s title track and was a Top Fifty hit in both Europe and the USA.

This whole album was an afterthought – Procol Harum had been invited to play a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in August of 1971, at the tail-end of their last tour with Robin Trower in the lineup. Amid all of the preparation – including the writing of new orchestral arrangements by Gary Brooker and with a new lead guitarist, Dave Ball, just joining the lineup – Brooker decided that it might be a good idea to preserve a professionally made tape of the show and suggested that A&M Records, to which they were signed, might want to record the performance; the label agreed with just a week to go until the concert.

The best collection yet devoted to Procol Harum's classic early period ties together the many facets of their sound and their early history, including numerous outtakes and all of the music on four albums from 1967 through 1970. The clarity of the sound makes the first album - which was roundly criticized, especially in England, for having been cut in mono in late 1967 - seem a lot more muscular and progressive here than it did in its original release form. The producers have tampered with the song order on A Salty Dog, moving that record's title track in amongst disc three's single sides for time considerations while still leaving "Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg" off of the first CD (the original commercial flaw with the debut album in England was the absence of either of those songs, and the seven-month-plus delay in getting it out)…

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic 1969 album A SALTY DOG by PROCOL HARUM. Recorded at Abbey Road studios, the album captured the excellence of the musicians in the group, namely Gary Brooker (voice, piano), Robin Trower (lead guitar), David Knights (bass guitar), B.J. Wilson (drums) and Matthew Fisher (Hammond organ).

EXCEPTIONAL, EARLY LIVE US BROADCASTS FROM PROCOL HARUM Procol Harum s third album, A Salty Dog (1969), was popular among both fans and critics alike and was the group s first album to sell well in the UK. The title track gained major US FM radio airplay and saw the band s profile rise significantly. Between the recording of the record in January 69, and its release in June, the mighty Harum hit the road, performing shows in both Europe and in the US. On March 16th the group were on the East Coast of America and performed at Bill Graham s Fillmore East venue in New York, where they put on a quite majestic show which included cuts from all the group s releases to date. Tracks one thru nine on this CD now feature the full show Procul Harum played at this stunning show, which took place more than fifty years ago. A few weeks later the group were on the West Coast, and in early April they played a short set at LA s Troubadour, which featured quite possibly the best live version of Whiter Shade Of Pale ever committed to tape (both shows here were recorded for live FM radio broadcast). Tracks ten - fourteen herein feature this show in full.
