With UK property prices now at their highest in years, more people are dreaming of carving a living from bricks and mortar. However, without expert advice, mistakes in property development can prove painfully expensive. In this one-off programme, multimillionaire businessman Dave Fishwick lends a hand on projects and finances that are heading for disaster. Dee Lazzerini and her partner Steve Woodford have taken out a mortgage to work on a house in their home patch of Poole, while in Winchester, teacher Elise Farzam and her engineer husband Sam have bought a property that is a potential goldmine - if they can get started on it.

Money (and private property) is definitely the root of all evil in this eccentric work, the third film in a loose trilogy on "social schizophrenia" that also includes Petri’s Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and The Working Class Goes to Heaven. Making expressionist use of Brechtian monologues, stylized montage, and character types, this barbed satire concerns a lowly bank clerk (Bucci), literally allergic to money and revolted by its nefarious influence on humanity, who launches a campaign of harassment against a wealthy butcher (Tognazzi), stealing small, insignificant items— but never money—from the man. The victim uses the thefts to make large and fraudulent insurance claims, refusing to finger the thief for fear his own financial improprieties might be exposed.

A railroad official, Owen Legate comes to Dodson, Mississippi to shut down much of the town's railway (town's main income). Owen unexpectedly finds love with Dodson's flirt and main attraction, Alva Starr. Alva and Owen then try to escape Alva's mother's (Hazel) clutches and the town's revenge.
