Attempts to encapsulate the vastness of Punk Rock (capitalized throughout this piece, because let's face it, it's a proper noun) throughout its now lengthy history have all fallen well short of the mark. Is it a musical genre or a cultural movement? A hairstyle or the very essence of DIY? Don Letts, original punk biographer, DJ and musician, in his film, Punk: Attitude sums it up just perfectly with that film's very title. Punk is an attitude and, as he puts it himself, "part of an ongoing movement of counterculture." After airing on the Independent Film Channel as part of "Punk Month", Letts' film claws its way, gasping for air, out of a packed house at CBGB's or the Roxy and onto DVD for home consumption.

Daft Punk’s scintillating electronic score to TRON: Legacy is coming back to vinyl for its 10th anniversary with a lavish edition courtesy of the Mondo label.The label lists this release as one of their “holy grails,” and they’ve spared no expense in celebrating it. This 2LP, 180-gram release, pressed on blue/white and red/black vinyl, features the original soundtrack program along with seven bonus cuts that didn’t make the original CD release. (As was standard a decade ago, they were divided among deluxe editions and even digital accounts – though they first appeared together on a Disney-pressed double vinyl edition not long after the original release.) Designer Matt Taylor has created eye-popping artwork for the gatefold jacket – including a colorful character collage for the cover and an inner image of Daft Punk – as well as a spot-varnished, die-cut O-card that features the marquee for Flynn’s Arcade and a laser-outlined arcade cabinet.

La véritable grande escroquerie du rock and roll , c’est pas du côté des Pistols, enfin de Mac Laren et son film « The Great Rock and Roll Swindle » que vous la trouverez… c’est plutôt en Belgique qu’il faut la chercher, plus précisément chez Lou Deprijck et Yvan Lacomblez, deux bruxellois pur jus. Si leurs noms, là, tout de suite, ne vous disent rien, en revanche, il y a de fortes chances que vous vous soyez déjà trémoussés sur le hit interplanétaire dont ils sont les heureux (et depuis fortunés…) créateurs : “Ca plane pour moi”!

While punk music has been well represented in documentaries about individual bands (The Filth and the Fury, Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten and probably even a few that weren’t directed by Julien Temple), attempts to provide a documentary overview of the genre often end up as scatter-shot messes, with the documentarian mistaking punk’s exuberance as an excuse to substitute a well-told tale for a breathless look at a dozen bands that do battle under the punk flag: Look: the Ramones / Sex Pistols / Clash / X / Germs / Green Day! A tip o’ the cap, then to Christoph Dreher, whose House of the Rising Punk, originally released in 1998 for German television and only now finding a home on DVD, expertly avoids falling into the above-mentioned trap, and stands as one of the stronger depictions of the CBGB’s/NYC punk scene.

Soul Jazz Records’ long-lasting Punk 45 series are high-quality editions of early punk 45s. While previous editions have focussed on the early days of punk in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Akron, France, and proto-punk, this new edition focusses on mainly do-it-yourself, or self-released 45s, all made in the UK in the early days of punk.
While only a handful of Punk 45s were released in 1976, the following two years produced an avalanche of them. Aside from the few punk bands who signed to major labels, many of these singles were self-released private press 45s or independent label 45s. With limited distribution and access to the media, many of these sunk without trace and were lost in history. This album features many of these independent punk 45 gems, lost nuggets of gold from the sea of time!
