Quatuor Ébène & Michel Portal - Eternal Stories (2017) Music

The New York Times has described the French ensemble as “a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band” and its recordings of Haydn, Bartók, Brahms and Schubert have been praised all over the world. Portal and the Ébène first played together in Paris in 2013, where Piazzolla’s compositions were also on the programme, prompting Le Monde to speak of “a significant lesson, a superb encounter, a real conversation.”

Im Jahr 2011 bot ich dem Tana Quartett meine beiden ersten Streichquartette an. Es behandelte die Partituren mit erstaunlicher Entschlossenheit und Kreativität. Nach ersten Konzerten beauftragten mich die Musiker mit einem dritten Quartett, das dann mit den ersten beiden auf natürliche Weise ein Triptychon bildete. Man könnte es auch als ein mehr sätziges Werk betrachten, das sich aus dem gleichen Material entwickelt. Das vierte Quartett, wiederum ein Auftrag des Tana Quartetts, führt die Elektronik ein. Seine mikrotonale Sprache ist eher zurückhaltend, manchmal kontemplativ, wird von Zeit zu Zeit jedoch von heftigen Stößen erschüttert.

These sterling performances have been high among the prime available Beethoven Quartet sets since their initial appearance in the early 1970s as sought-after Telefunken LPs. Naïve’s booklet and transfers are the same as those of the 1987 Auvidis Valois set. So what’s this release got that the previous one didn’t? A bargain price, with the eight CDs marked down to the price of four. These are happy days for Beethoven Quartet lovers: my three favorite complete sets (the others are the Quartetto Italiano on Philips and the Talich on Calliope) are all now available at midprice.

The French ensemble is marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a global tour of 21 countries.
