Five stars for Ken Burns on this excellent compilation! I really like that Ken Burns was able to capture jazz from all the major periods of jazz from the traditional to fusion. Some say, as one reviewer did here, that bop was "crammed" in and traditional jazz was represented a little healthy in this series.

1999 audio release by Terre Thaemlitz, on Mille Plateaux, that examines the commodification of queer culture/community. Taking Stock In Our Pride begins with an impressive edit of sound clips culled from San Fransisco Pride media reportage. The commentary focusses on the monetary value of the queer community while revealing serious bigotry on the part of the reporters. This quick-fire montage folds into the extended ambient soundscape which occupies the remainder of the album.

Josie Cotton is a classic example of an artist whose entire career is overshadowed by one song. This album's hit, the in-dubious-taste "Johnny Are You Queer?," was such a controversial song at the time of its 1982 release that the rest of this fine album was overlooked in the brouhaha. That's a shame, because Convertible Music is a classic of the whole California girly pop scene of the early '80s, on a level with the Go Go's' Beauty and the Beat, Bonnie Hayes' Good Clean Fun, and the first Bangles EP. The songs, mostly either by Cotton herself or her producers, Bobby and Larson Paine, are neat '60s pastiches with elements of surf (the glorious opener, "He Could Be the One"), Shangri-Las-style melodrama (the sultry "I Need the Night Tonight"), and Farfisa-driven swoony pop bliss ("Rockin' Love," "So Close"). Cotton's voice, which can switch from a bratty whine to a sexy purr from one line to the next, is perfect for this kind of disposable pop, and the production, though a tiny bit slick at times, is sympathetic to the unapologetic good times on display. Convertible Music is one of the most perfectly named albums ever; this is the sort of music that sounds best with the top down on the way to the beach.

With cooperation from the Verve and Columbia Legacy catalogs, the Ken Burns Jazz series on CD individually spotlights the musical excellence of 22 jazz originators whose careers and influence are explored in Burns' PBS documentary Jazz. Bandleader Fletcher Henderson's ability as a composer and talent scout greatly outweighed his skills as either a pianist or showman. Henderson allowed his musicians to show off their own talents, while he preferred to stay in the background. A number of soon-to-be legends moved through his ranks over the years, including Don Redman, Benny Carter, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Art Blakey, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Rex Stewart, and even Sun Ra…

Sun Ra was never reticent about honoring his musical heroes. These icons included Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, George Gershwin, Fats Waller, songwriters such as Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, and Irving Berlin, even Walt Disney, whose film music Ra performed jubilantly and often. But no one meant as much to Ra as Fletcher Henderson (1897–1952). With the exception of Ellington, no bandleader's repertoire was honored more in Ra's set lists than the man who invented the jazz big band.

Return to The Valley Of The Go Go's is an excellent double disk anthology from the Go Go's. Their recording career consisted of just three albums, but this disk contains some great unreleased live work from their early days. Songs like "Screaming" & "London Boys" and covers like "Johnny Are You Queer?" and "Walking In The Sand" show the band's punk roots that are balanced by pop sensibilities. All the hits are here including the shimmering "Our Lips Are Sealed", the sprightly "Vacation", the roaring "Turn To You", the pounding "Head Over Heels" and the original Stiff records version of the hypnotic "We Got The Beat". Lesser known album tracks like "This Town", "Everything But Party Time", "Skidmarks on My Heart", "Speeding" and "Get Up & Go" still sound fresh and are equally as good as their hits. The album contains three new songs which are pretty good especially "The Whole World Has Lost It's Head".

The Drunken Cholos are actually a reunion of the very first lineup of irreverent pop-punksters The Queers, reunited to record the seven-song EP Livin' La Vida Loco, released by Hopeless in early 2001.
