Trumpeter Ralph Alessis first two ECM albums as a leader Baida (2013) and Quiver (2016) justly earned him high praise. The New York Times lauded the elegant precision and power of Baida, while The Guardian extolled Quiver, pointing to the leaders flawless technique and ability to draw on jazz tradition while avoiding its clichés. After those quartet discs, Alessis third ECM album, Imaginary Friends, presents him fronting a longtime working quintet in its first recording since 2010. Alessis bandmates include a kindred spirit in saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, a studio and stage partner of the trumpeters since they were students together at the California Institute of the Arts in the late 80s.

In his second ECM appearance (following a critically-acclaimed duo recording with Markus Stockhausen) pianist Florian Weber leads a strong cast through a programme of his compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players. “I wanted this project to be as open as possible”, he says. “It’s the idea of exploration that is important here, and the differences between the players.” The strong, grounded bass of Linda May Han Oh contrasts strikingly with Nasheet Waits’s fleet, fluid drumming, setting up new contexts for Ralph Alessi’s elegantly inventive trumpet and the leader’s highly creative piano playing. Lucent Waters was recorded at Studios La Buissonne.

Keyboardist James Carney's dream group features a four-horn frontline: two saxes, a trumpet and a trombone. The music he’s given his starry band of improvisers to interpret on 2007's Green-Wood is beautifully crafted and intensely grooving in various feels, from second line and funk to 6/4 and complex time signatures. Inspired by the whole tradition, Carney’s aesthetic unites the jazz mainstream and avant-garde, blending musical derring-do with a post-bop-meets-chamber-music-and-rock lyricism. His band delivers with individuality and relish, while the high resolution recording makes the most of earcatching voicings, timbres and textures. It’s obvious both from his words and his music that Carney’s enthusiasm and energy is tempered by great thoughtfulness and reverence for the art form.
