With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music, the California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes.
While most of the discussions of Frank Zappa have to do with his satirical and off-color lyrics, the fact remains that he was one of the finest and most underappreciated guitarists around. This collection places the spotlight squarely on Zappa's mastery of the guitar. Recorded for the most part in 1979 and 1980 (with a few tracks dating as far back as 1977), Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar is simply a collection of guitar solos. Even though most of the tracks were just edited out of their original song context, they fare well as stand-alone pieces, as Zappa was an ever-inventive player.
Gurrumul Yunupingu is a world music phenomenon. A blind Aboriginal singer-songwriter from the remote Arnhem Land, he sings in the dialects of the Gumatj clan, uses simple acoustic backing and has sold more than 500,000 albums thanks to his yearning, soulful voice and sad-edged songs. His lyrics may deal with his homeland, nature and contemplation, but his gently epic melodies have echoes of western folk, gospel, soul and reggae. His second album follows the same approach as the first, but was recorded in New York with Gurrumul now playing not just acoustic guitar, but piano and drums.
