Reinhard Goebel founded Musica Antiqua Köln in 1973. The ensemble devoted itself to playing Baroque music on period instruments, with a particular penchant for playing neglected or overlooked repertoire. Many of their best albums have sold well without featuring music by well-known composers. These releases also appear to have boosted the (posthumous) careers of composers such as Heinichen, with their concerti album from 1993, and the Veracini Overture album from 1994.

Conductor and violinist Reinhard Goebel has been at the forefront of the historical performance movement as the founder and director of the Musica Antiqua Köln. Goebel has an impressive, well-regarded recording catalog, and following Musica Antiqua's run and his retirement from playing the violin, he has continued to conduct and has established himself as an educator of note. Goebel was born on July 31, 1952, in Siegen, then West Germany. He began lessons on the violin at age 12 and attended the Cologne Conservatory, where he studied with Franzjosef Maier.

Christopher White and Melanie Reinhard have been performing the Beethoven Violin Sonatas together for over thirty years, from when they first met in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory of Music. They have become a staple of their recitals in combination with other repertoire. Although the ten sonatas are mostly early works and not his most significant (compared to the string quartets for example) they are a charming and varied set of compositions. It is a shame that often one only hears the select (and famous) few such as the Spring or Kreutzer sonatas because some of the lesser-known sonatas (for instance Op. 12 No. 2 in A major or the glorious slow movement in the sixth sonata) deserve a much wider audience.

This programme was conceived for Bachfest Leipzig 2016 and performed to great acclaim. We were invited as part of the concert series “Ausgezeichnet” (which translates as “excellent”), where young award recipients of international music competitions present themselves as part of the Bach Festival.

Mr. Lee? Wer ist dieser Mr. Lee? Der schweigsame Reisende, der sich vor den Seelen der Geschundenen im S21, dem Folterkerker, verneigt, den die barfüßigen Kinder in den Slums von Phnom Penh lieben, weil er ihnen ihre Postkarten oder Zigaretten abkauft, wer ist der stille Europäer, den sie „der weiße Elefant“ nennen? Reinhard Mey wahrt sein Geheimnis, aber er legt musikalische Kieselsteine für die Fährtenleser aus, sie werden Mr. Lee finden. Diese Spurensuche zieht sich wie ein Leitmotiv durch das neue Album. Für sein neues Projekt "New Mozart" mit dem Mozarteumorchester Salzburg beschäftigt Reinhard Goebel sich mit musikalischen Schätzen, bei denen es um die Musik von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart geht. Gleich auf dem ersten Album gibt es eine Weltersteinspielung: die Orchesterfassung der Bläserserenade Gran Partita, KV 361 von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Die Gran Partita für große Bläser- und Streicherbesetzung zu einer Orchesterfassung richtete der bayerische Komponist und Mozart-Experte Franz Gleissner (1761-1818) ein und veröffentlichte sie im Jahr 1800 als "Sinfonia concertante" Op. 91.
