"L'ultima estate" è quella trascorsa dal Governatore di San Pietroburgo nella sua dimora di campagna, dove si è inutilmente rifugiato per proteggere sé e la sua famiglia. Siamo nel 1906, e il Governatore ha fatto chiudere l'Università in cui infuriano le proteste studentesche; inutilmente, perché l'uomo che sua moglie ha scelto per proteggerlo sta tramando alle sue spalle. Sotto le mentite spoglie di guardia del corpo c'è infatti un giovane cospiratore capace di conquistarsi fiducia, ammirazione, persino amore da parte dei membri della famiglia. In un crescendo di tensione, la tragedia matura dietro la trama sottile della corrispondenza tra i protagonisti, e al lettore non resta che ascoltarne le voci, entrando nelle pieghe dei loro pensieri e della loro intimità…

Monaco, inizi del Novecento. In un ricco appartamento, una signora viene trovata morta nel suo letto. Presto si scopre che il decesso non è dovuto al decorso della malattia che affliggeva la vittima, bensì a una dose letale di veleno. I sospetti ricadono subito sull'ex marito, il medico italiano Sigismondo Enea Deruga.

The program consists of three song cycles composed during the Second World War: "Cabaret Songs" (1937-39) by Benjamin Britten, "5 Love Songs after Ricarda Huch" (1939) by Viktor Ullmann and "Chants de terre et de ciel" (1938) by Olivier Messiaen. The lives of all three composers were severely affected by the war:
