Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Coming out at the tail-end of 2008, when the influence of major labels is on a slow steady decline, Revolutions in Sound can be seen as a portrait of a time that's beginning to recede into the past: a time when there was such a thing as mass entertainment, when the pop audience all shared a common bond of hit records they either loved or rallied against. Perhaps the greatest things about this monumental box set is that it captures that colossus while also illustrating that for a while, majors did take risks. Of course, Warner was the riskiest of all the majors, never held back by an anti-rock & roll sourpuss like Mitch Miller, who struggled to keep CBS out of the tumult of the '60s (this with no less than Bob Dylan as the label's flagship rock artist). Instead, Warner embraced the underground, recording some of the strangest to shake out of the '60s, and that adventure fits a label that turned to rock & roll to help establish themselves as a real player at the turn of the '60s.

Forget about the title of this release, it is an excellent compilation of music from the early seventies right up to the present day. Unfortunately record companies ( and critics ! ) seem to have the need to put music into categories, possibly to attract the purchaser, but, as in the case of this disc, it could quite conceivably have the opposite outcome. I do not feel that this selection has any more connection with Summer than with any other time of the year. I also feel that the term " smooth " is derogatory in its concept to most of the tracks here.

Though R&B is hardly the first thing that comes to mind when Nashville, Tennessee is mentioned, the town known worldwide as the cradle of country music does indeed have a long, rich tradition of blues, soul, and more. The revelatory two-disc collection NIGHT TRAIN TO NASHVILLE makes Nashville's R&B legacy clear by tracing it across four decades. The first disc abounds with delightful obscurities like Cecil Gant's jump-blues tune "Nashville Jumps" and convict vocal group the Prisonaires' haunting ballad "Just Walkin' in the Rain." The second disc contains more familiar fare, such as Joe Simon's soul gem "The Chokin' Kind" and Arthur Alexander's legendary Brill Building-goes-South lament "Anna (Go to Him)" (later covered by the Beatles). The context provided by NIGHT TRAIN's theme also serves to underscore the not-so-subtle connections that have always existed between country music and R&B; it's easy to imagine a great country singer sinking his teeth into virtually any of the soulful gems on offer here.

Recorded between 1945 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Michael Gray.
