Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is the twelfth studio album by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released on September 25, 2009 by Island Records. After promotion for her previous album, E=MC² (2008) ended, Carey began to work on a new album, producing songs with Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, and revealed the album's title through Twitter. Carey said that Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel would have "big ballads", and that "each song is its own snapshot of a moment in a story".

The 15-track album celebrates the pair’s love story, giving fans a unique window into their relationship. This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences. It chronicles their entire story—before they met, falling in love and looking to what the future holds.

It’s about the worries that go on in your mind. If they go unsaid, they eat at you, but at the same time, if you speak of them, they eat away at your relationship. It’s almost more about self-doubt than anything. Unintentionally pushing someone away because of your personal fear of not being enough for them, but more so the fear of them wanting something greater.”

Is it jazz? Is it rock? Is it pop? It’s hard to find an answer. It is most definitely a work that furthers the capacity of jazz to encompass and reinterpret all languages of music. In any case, the title tells a lot. “Beyond” means “farther”, and Mattia Cigalini and his band (Bebo Ferra on guitar, Riccardo Fioravanti on bass and Stefano Bagnoli on drums) truly push themselves far and manage to find a surprising point of touchdown between jazz and pop-rock of the last 10 years.
