River

“How to begin? No beginning… never ending reverberation,” Antoine Beuger writes in the accompanying notes to Leo Svirsky’s River Without Banks. Dedicated to his first piano teacher Irena Orlov, River Without Banks is a mesmerizing, emotional collection of pieces that are simultaneously complex and fluid.

After two exemplary ECM discs in the company of Andy Sheppard, Michel Benita has an album with his own group. The Ethics band is international, and the Algiers-born bassist leads a line-up comprised of a flugelhornist from Fribourg, Switzerland, a koto player from Tokyo, a guitarist from Drøbak, Norway, and a French drummer who once lived in Turkey as a member of the Istanbul Symphony. The group’s music, correspondingly, flows - like the glistening river of the title - beyond borders.

Where The River Goes carries the story forward from Wolfgang Muthspiel’s highly-acclaimed Rising Grace recording of 2016, reuniting the Austrian guitarist with Brad Mehldau, Ambrose Akinmusire and Larry Grenadier, heavy talents all, and bringing in the great Eric Harland on drums. Much more than an “all-star” gathering, the group plays as an ensemble with its own distinct identity, evident both in the interpretation of Muthspiel’s pieces and in the collective playing.

Pare Lorentz's films "The Plow that Broke the Plains" (1936) and "The River" (1937) are landmark American documentary films. Aesthetically, they break new ground in seamlessly marrying pictorial imagery, symphonic music, and free poetic verse, all realized with supreme artistry. Ideologically, they indelibly encapsulate the strivings of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "New Deal". Virgil Thomson's scores for both films are among the most famous ever composed for the movies.

Saramaccan Sound (Suriname) are a brother duo - Dwight Sampie and Robert Jabini - who write and perform flowing acoustic songs sung in Saramaccan, the language from the Americas with the most African elements. Their debut album was recorded in situ by Grammy winner Ian Brennan (Parchman Prison Prayer, Ustad Saami, The Good Ones) along a remote riverside in the Amazon region of Suriname. The lyrics are topical and reference everyday strife such as the rising tides and floods in the area due to global warming.

The album "as if a river were singing…" brings together the most recent orchestral compositions of three younger generation Estonian composers, borrowing its title from the album's opening piece, Alisson Kruusmaa's eponymous work. The artists who collaborated on this album regard it as a kind of musical riverbed, with many different streams flowing into it – each with its own journey, its own song. The connecting bridge is the Pärnu City Orchestra and their chief conductor Kaspar Mänd, who commissioned all the recorded works. The pieces were premiered at the Pärnu Concert Hall, the home hall of the orchestra, between 2020 and 2021, and are heard here in their world-premiere recordings.

Green River was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984. Although the band had very little commercial impact outside their native Seattle, Green River were pioneers of the grunge music genre. The grunge style was featured both in Green River's own music and the music its members would create in future bands, including Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam. Green River reunited for several live shows in 2008 and 2009. Unreleased live recording from the band’s personal archives. Recorded on Sept 28,1984 at the Tropicana in Olympia Washington. Featuring Mark Arm & Steve Turner of Mudhoney and Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam.
