Featuring two of the most prominent European classical musicians of their time, ZINO FRANCESCATTI & ROBERT CASADESUS features both individual performances and duets. Francescatti was perhaps the finest violinist of the mid-20th century; coming from a family of musicians, he was a child prodigy who gave his first concert at the age of five. Casadesus also came from a musical background, and won acclaim throughout his career as a technically perfect pianist and fine classical composer. The pair collaborate here in performances of works by Beethoven, and individually perform work by composers as diverse as Debussy and Bazzini.

The collaboration between Zina Francescatti and Robert Casadesus is well documented in a series of what are still considered exemplary recordings - and it was one such rare, and serendipitous, partnership. Casadesus (1899-1972) came from a versatile French family of musicians and was taught by the same Parisian teacher as Gabrielle, his future wife and frequent duo partner. He gained world renown in the 1920s when he toured all five continents. Casadesus and his family fled the Nazi regime in Europe and settled in Princeton, New Jersey between 1942 and 1946.

The idea of collecting in an album some hitherto unrecorded works by Robert Casadesus results from my aim to bring to light the wonderful music by this composer, whose fame as a creator was overshadowed by that as a pianist.
Born in 1899, after obtaining his diploma at the Paris Conservatoire, Robert Casadesus cooperated with composer Maurice Ravel writing the catalogue of the latter’s works, and he gave recitals, sharing the stage with his friend, in France, Spain and England. Many recordings document his concert activity and his art, while recordings of his work as a composer are scanty. He wrote numerous pieces for solo piano, for ensembles, for voice and orchestra. A refined interpreter of French classicism and impressionism, he frequently played in duo with his wife Gabrielle L’Hôte (aka Gaby), and also with his son Jean: for them he wrote works for two or three pianos. He taught for many years at the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau, and he lived in America during World War II.

Robert Casadesus (1899-1972) is today almost considered an American pianist – he based himself there from the Second World War onwards and he is known today through the huge number of recordings he made for US Columbia from 1940 until his death, but as a musician and pianist he was French to the core. He had studied at the Paris conservatoire with Isidor Philipp and Louis Diémer and his combination of immaculate technique, a light and brilliant touch and the refined elegance of his interpretations reveal why he was considered one of the greatest French pianists of the century.

From the notes:"It is often said, not without justification, that Toscanini's performances stand out from those of his contemporaries for what might be called their (for the time) 'modern' approach, which is to say that the excesses of Romantic subjective interpretation were, generally speaking, not for him. What distinguished his readings principally is his extraordinary command of structure, realised through the appositeness of his chosen tempi, very rarely varied, and only then to make a definite musical point, almost as a punctuation in the overall schematic plan, allied to orchestral playing of considerable concentration and commitment. Toscanini never needed to indulge in jejune 'point-making' as an interpretative habit - nor did he countenance it in other conductors." written by Robert Matthew-Walker

Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com
The brilliant, energetic readings of Robert Casadesus and George Szell set a standard for this repertory that has yet to be surpassed. Dramatic and tightly wound, but never dry or unsmiling, these accounts combine grace and lucidity with an almost operatic lyricism, and remain among the most satisfying and evocative in the catalog. The sound is dry but firm and detailed, and Sony has done an excellent job of remastering. –Ted Libbey
