Dance Into the Light is as self-explanatory as titles get: after dwelling in the darkness following a divorce and a split from Genesis, Phil Collins is ready to get happy. That isn't to say Dance Into the Light is devoid of either ambition or sobriety: Collins turns "Just Another Story" into a piece of meditative funk, while "Wear My Hat," "River So Wide," and "Lorenzo" find the drummer delving into African rhythms reminiscent of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting (it also points toward the work Collins did on Tarzan just a few years later). Nevertheless, the overall tenor of the record is bright and cheerful, the sound of a man ready for a revival. Sometimes, he'll throw out a specific callback to his past – the title track recalls the snappy punch of "Sussudio" – but often, he settles into an expertly modulated craft, favoring sprightly pop to somnolent ballads. Given this chipper outlook, it's odd that the thing that undoes Dance Into the Light – outside of the slight cognitive dissonance between the straight-ahead pop and Afrobeat explorations – is an indulgence all too typical of '90s albums made with the CD in mind: tracks stretch out one or two minutes longer than necessary, adding up to a 13-track album that feels flabby at just over an hour. Trimmed by 20 minutes, this would've been a nice little adult pop album, but as it stands, it sounds like a lively little record attempting to escape its immaculately tailored straitjacket.

On this album, Was (Not Was) explores various blends of funk, rock, dance and pop styles with delightful results. There is much quirky humour in a song like I Feel Better Than James Brown, an addictive tune with a hypnotic beat that pays tribute to James Brown's masterpiece I Feel Good. The lyrics are just priceless! Unusually for Was (Not Was), they also explore the dark side of life in Maria Novarro, a powerful song with a nervous beat and disturbing lyrics about domestic violence: "In the city of Angels, there's no mercy and there's no tomorrow for Maria Novarro …". Adding to the charms of this multifaceted album is Leonard Cohen who contributes the main vocal on Elvis' Rolls Royce over a jazzy background. The next track Dressed To Be Killed is a jerky rap number with lovely sax infusions, whilst Just Another Couple Broken Hearts is a mellow ballad.

For whatever reason, folk singer/songwriter Eric Andersen is probably still best known for such self-penned classics as “Thirsty Boots,” “Close the Door Lightly When You Go,” and “Violets of Dawn,” all of which appeared on his 1966 sophomore album, ‘Bout Changes ’n’ Things. Those are great songs, but Andersen crafted many more standout recordings in the years and decades that followed, including numbers on albums like Blue River (1972), Be True to You (1975), Ghosts Upon the Road (1989), and You Can’t Relive the Past (2000).

Not the true follow-up to 2012's Purpose, the transitional Journals instead compiles the 2013 singles Justin Bieber released on a weekly basis from October through December. It presents the songs in order of release and adds a handful of previously unissued tracks. Nine of the singles hit the Canadian Top 40, including the stormy ballad "Heartbreaker," the late-'90s neo-Timbaland throwback "All That Matters," and a playful collaboration with Chance the Rapper on "Confident." By design, it's a patchwork, and as such, the quality of the material is more variable than that of Bieber's proper albums. The digital-only release of Journals was somewhat lost in the midst of Bieber's retirement announcement (which would be retracted) and the theatrical release of Justin Bieber's Believe.

Eurythmics were one of the most successful duos to emerge in the early '80s. Where most of their British synth pop contemporaries disappeared from the charts as soon as new wave faded away in 1984, Eurythmics continued to have hits until the end of the decade, making vocalist Annie Lennox a star in her own right, as well as establishing instrumentalist Dave Stewart as a successful, savvy producer and songwriter. Originally, the duo channelled the eerily detached sound of electronic synthesizer music into pop songs driven by robotic beats. By the mid-'80s, singles like "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Here Comes the Rain Again" had made the group into international stars, and the group had begun to experiment with their sound, delving into soul and R&B.
