The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Beginning with "Searchin'" and "Young Blood," their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s.

Aladdin Records, based in Los Angeles, was a very influential label in American music history. This is not the full story of Aladdin Records but it's a very good sampler of the label's output from 1947-1961. It's 50 tracks, 25 tracks on each of the 2CDs in the set, of very good R&B from the period. Each CD is about 60 minutes playing time. The sound is good for recordings of this era. Amos Milburn, Lightnin' Hopkins, Lowell Fulson, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Billie Holiday, Shirley & Lee, Gene & Eunic, Bobby Wall, Thurston Harris, The Velvetones and many more.

Digitally re-mastered and expanded 40th Anniversary edition of this album from the Australian rockers fronted by Ross Wilson. Re-mastered from the original tapes by legendary mastering engineer Don Bartley, it sounds incredible. Ross Hannaford's guitar both grinds and shimmers. Gary Young's drums simultaneously swing and shuffle. Wayne Duncan's bass sounds fat in the best possible way. Wilson's vocals and guitar parts are delivered with such self-assuredness that it's hard to believe that this was a performance by a 23 year old from Melbourne, Australia. It's hard to underestimate the influence these youngsters had on Australian music. In addition to the original tracks re-mastered, the Daddy Who? 40th Anniversary Edition comes with four bonus tracks which were included on the Reprise Records international pressing. The artwork comes with all of the images from the original LP cover as designed by Ross Hannaford and Ian McCausland along with new liner notes by Ross Wilson, plus some vintage images from the Daddy Cool vault.

George Goldner Presents The Gone Story: Doo-Wop to Soul 1957-1963 contains 65 songs representing a dead-perfect cross-section of the singles output of one of New York's great R&B labels of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The opening cut, the Dubs' slow, romantic "Don't Ask Me (To Be Lonely)," shows just how far George Goldner's conception of rhythm & blues had come in the four years since he'd founded Rama Records in 1953. Gone Records, starting in 1957, featured a more sophisticated output, oriented toward elegant, impassioned ballads rather than the dance numbers that had gone over so big in the mid-'50s.

Rock and Roll / Rhythm and Blues / Jump Blues / Doo Wop

This is an outstanding collection from the vaults of King and its subsidiary labels, Federal and Deluxe. These 24 tracks collect jump blues, doo wop, piano boogie, and outright bizarre novelties stretching from the late '40s through the early '60s. There is not a bad track on Mule Milk 'N' Firewater, featuring plenty of well-known names on mainly wild up-tempo songs by Roy Brown, Big Jay McNeely, Little Willie John, Hank Ballad & the Midnighters, and Jack Dupree. There are a few standouts amongst these rarities that may raise a few eyebrows. "Ring a Ling Dong" is from 1955 by Rudy Moore aka Rudy Ray Moore of Dolomite fame, and "Davy, You Upset My Home" finds a young Joe Tex vividly describing how his domestic situation is being torn apart by his girlfriend's unhealthy obsession with all things Davy Crockett! Unbelievable!
