The performances, as captured on Live 1965, provide fierce, elemental testimony to the Rolling Stones coming into their own as interpreters of blues-rooted material as well as to the emerging songwriting acumen of the Jagger/Richards team.

Filmed at the German city’s Weserstadion on September 2, 1998, the band had by then completed four legs in the stadiums and arenas of North America (twice), Asia and South America before finally landing in Europe early that summer. Ever the innovators, Bridges To Babylon was a tour of firsts - thp first time the band went on the road with a permanent В-stage, and also the first time where fans could vote on the band's website for a track they wanted to hear on the setlist - Memory Motel in the case of the Bremen fans.

A live document of the Brian Jones-era Rolling Stones sounds enticing, but the actual product is a letdown, owing to a mixture of factors, some beyond the producers' control and other very much their doing. The sound on the original LP was lousy – which was par for the course on most mid-'60s live rock albums – and the remasterings have only improved it marginally, and for that matter not all of it's live; a couple of old studio R&B covers were augmented by screaming fans that had obviously been overdubbed…

The most interesting archival release of the Rolling Stones since More Hot Rocks, 20 years ago, and the first issue of truly unreleased material by the Stones from this period. And the Stones have some competition from the Who, Taj Mahal, and John Lennon on the same release…

This is for real as far as the hype goes, because this has got to be the most revealing look at the Rolling Stones at work in the studio that has ever surfaced. It's a 4 CD release that comes in a 12" box in a box package with a deluxe color outer sleeve. The cover picture is of a woman who looks to be in some trans-like state from the album cover of the old Capital Records LP "Fire Goddess". There is also a booklet that features many pictures from the August 25, 1994 Rolling Stone issue on the band. The booklet has an essay on Voodoo Lounge by David Fricke from Rolling Stone July 14-28, 1994 issue. There are also track by track details of the band line up, and a listing of basic differences in the recordings from the original releases.
