Univers Zero guitarist Roger Trigaux left the group after their second release, Heresie, and formed Present. This reissue combines 1980's Triskaïdékaphobie with 1985's Le Poison Qui Rend Fou. Trigaux was joined on the 1980 debut by Univers Zero drummer Daniel Denis and bassist Christian Genet, who played on Univers Zero's first release. Le Poison Qui Rend Fou maintains the same lineup, except that bassist Ferdinand Philippot replaces Genet on electric bass…

Poison's Greatest Hits 1986-1996 is as definitive as a Poison compilation could hope to be. Featuring a full 18 tracks, including all of their Top 50 hits ("Talk Dirty to Me," "I Want Action," "Nothin' but a Good Time," "Fallen Angel," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Your Mama Don't Dance," "Unskinny Bop," "Something to Belive In," "Stand," among others) plus two unreleased cuts ("Sexual Thing," "Lay Your Body Down"), the album boasts every worthwhile song the group ever recorded, augmented by Bret Michaels' track-by-track commentary. Though the album isn't sequenced in chronological order, it plays like an excellent mixtape, which actually makes the album more listenable. Even on a compilation, Poison wears a little thin – there are still dull moments among these 18 songs, mainly in the form of lesser-known album tracks and singles – but still, Greatest Hits 1986-1996 is the most enteraining album the band ever released.

With so many faceless, sound-alike albums having come out of the "new jack swing" hybrid in the late '80s and early to mid-'90s, it's important to give credit to the form's more creative and imaginative figures. Along with Guy and Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe (a New Edition spin-off trio comprised of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe) delivered some of new jack swing's most worthwhile material. A hard-edged, tough-minded blend of R&B/funk and hip-hop, Poison was (like Brown's Don't Be Cruel) a radical departure from the Jackson 5-influenced "bubblegum soul" New Edition was originally known for.

Tony Joe was already 26 when he started recording, so perhaps that explains his style was already fully formed from the beginning onwards and that he had already written a bunch of material. He’d release 5 studio in four years and Tony Joe – his third and last album for Monument – was also a third effort in less than two years. With a pace like that, things didn’t change that strikingly: the recognizable swamp sound is still intact, even though there are perhaps a bit more acoustic songs, but the fact that four of the last five songs on the album were covers perhaps signalled that the pace was getting the best of him. Anyway, those who liked …Continued will dig Tony Joe as well. Overall the sound is perhaps a bit gruffer and there are not as many ballads, while there are several more similarities……….

Smalltown Boy was the first time anyone heard the voice of Jimmy Somerville; the voice of an angel. When Jimmy Somerville first appeared on TV nobody could believe the voice came from this tough, little, feisty Glaswegian who was always punching above his weight. Making the message as important as the music was Jimmy's aim, yet fame was a burden that he's still trying to unload; but he succeeded in three careers: as lead singer with Bronski Beat, then with The Communards, and up to the present time as a solo artist. This compilation charts Jimmy's music from agit prop to songs of love lost and found to raging, horny disco.

The British group the Parlour Band sounded slightly like a much more mainstream, less art-rock-inclined Yes on their sole LP, 1972's little-known Is a Friend. Several members later played in A Band Called O, also sometimes referred to as O Band. Parlour Band's only LP is progressive rock-tinged mainstream early-'70s British album-oriented rock, competent but no more than that. Both keyboard and guitar parts take a strong role, and there's a bit of the multiple tempo changes and classical-tinged organ burble of bands like Yes in songs like "Forgotten Dreams." Some other songs steer well clear of art rock, though, "Pretty Haired Girl" coming across like prototypical early-'70s mellow California harmony rock.
