This is the CD debut of superb, but still relatively unknown, hard-psychedelic LP based on moody, but intense guitars, distinguish organ/piano parts & complex vocal harmonies. Released by United Artists in early 1970, the only record of this US band showed the influences from The Beatles, The Moody Blues and Neil Young, but mainly from great, but underrated Damnation Of Adam Blessing - from which the two members provided some guitar work to the album. Wild Butter have offered a varied, imaginative and beautifully-arranged songs (with progressive attitude) and should appeal to fans of creative, melodic and sometimes quite heavy rock. This CD has been carefully remastered from the original, analogue source
A Garland for Linda is a benefit album for the cancer-fighting organization the Garland Appeal. It is also a tribute album to Linda McCartney, who died of breast cancer in 1998. Her husband, Paul McCartney, contributes one selection, but it's not a pop song – it's a classical piece. It is one of ten classical pieces, all written for Linda McCartney, by such modern classical composers as John Tavener, Judith Bingham, David Matthews, John Rutter, Roxanna Ranufnik, Michael Berkeley, Giles Swayne, and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. The pieces are all similar in tone – gentle, sometimes somber, yet always sweet. There may not be any major works here, but everyone's heart is in the right place, and the result is a sentimental mood piece that floats charmingly on its affection.
Nearly three decades into his career, Norwegian experimental jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær is, more than ever, a genre unto himself. While the influence of Miles Davis is undeniable, Molvær has created his own language on the trumpet, haunting and intimate, immersing the instrument in electronic trickery, with heavy use of mute. The band here is largely the same as that which played with Molvær on his last album, 2014's Switch, which is obvious in the smooth, relaxed, almost telepathic interplay between them, but on this record there's a distinctly different feel. The electronic flourishes that were distinctly audible on Switch have largely gone, though no doubt there is still all manner of subliminal studio trickery taking place…
Although the classical traditions of the Ottoman world were not notated, that doesn't mean there is no evidence as to how it sounded in past eras. In addition to verbal description and iconography, Istanbul was visited (and even lived in) by various musically trained Europeans. Jordi Savall and his Hespèrion XXI ensemble here rely on writings of a Moldavian prince, Dimitrie Cantemir, as well as traditional pieces from various strands in the complex cultural mosaic that has made up the city of Istanbul over the centuries.
