It has already been a wildly good year for death metal. I have had the pleasure of reviewing quite a few great albums this year that I was sure would make my album of the year list. It has almost seemed each time I hear some good, new death metal I go, ‘Damn, surely nobody can top this in 2019.’ Vitriol has done that, once again usurping the throne erected in the back of my mind.

Sure they'd prefer to mine the hoary vaults of Soundgarden before Suede and if this isn't so much a creative cul-de-sac, it's at least a reminder that mascara-lined university invective backed by a churning backwash of feedback and stage splits can sound like the wave of the future when released against the otherwise anemic music culture of its day…

These are the key elements in the compositional style of Dubit, Pier Alfeo's moniker, the Apulian countryside-based electronic musician and producer whose Backwards is proud to issue "Vitriol", his second full length.This ten-track album, which resumes the Backwards' CD-series started in 2013 with Fabio Orsi's "Endless Autumn", has taken more than one year of work, using both analogue instruments (such as Spring Reverb, pedals, [D]ronin, Moog etc …) and digital synthesis techniques. For its realization, Dubit also built by himself acoustic instruments composed of metal elements, strips, strings, barrels, amphorae as resonance boxes, and used prepared pianos, traditional Spanish instruments, didgeridoo, harmonica, snare drums and cymbals as well.
