Born in Naples, Carlo Albanesi settled in London in 1882 where he successfully balanced a career as a piano soloist with that of professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music. His playing was distinguished by delicacy and this is a notable feature of his compositions, of which the sonatas are eloquent examples of his art, large in scale and Classical in form. The Sonata in D minor marries serenity with grandiosity, while the Sonata in B flat minor is wide-ranging and romantic. Renowned for her ‘beautiful tone and deep emotion’ (American Record Guide), acclaimed pianist Julia Severus performs works by an unjustly forgotten composerpianist who was held in the highest esteem by colleagues, students and audiences alike.

The Italian composer, Carlo Albanesi, moved to London in 1882 where he successfully balanced a career as a piano soloist with that of professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music. The majority of Albanesi's compositional output was for solo piano and his pedagogical publications are still in use by students today. His narrative and lyrical style is apparent in both the Six Romances without Words and the improvisatory Album Leaves, while the antique dances in the Piano Suite show the influence of Grieg. The sonatas are considered the quintessence of Albanesi's oeuvre, and his last, the Sixth Sonata, contains an entire world of expressive nuance. Acclaimed pianist Julia Severus continues her survey of works by an unjustly forgotten composer pianist who was held in the highest esteem by colleagues, students and audiences alike.

00.04 Review by Ken Dryden
The Dutch quintet Ekseption, led by keyboardist Rick van der Linden, was always an uneven mix of progressive rock, at times burdened by excessive special effects, along with some catchy original compositions by the leader. This studio release has the usual overdone arrangements of classical music, including a tedious "Ave Maria" that incorporates excerpts of several works by Johann Sebastian Bach, along with a very distracting and disappointing treatment of Bach's "Partita No. 2 in C Minor." The most intriguing piece is the leader's "Piccadilly Sweet," in which the group is augmented by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This extended work finds van der Linden on organ, grand piano, and even a bit of a majestic pipe organ, while Rein van der Broek's trumpet solo and a fine effort on tenor sax by Dick Remelink add to the appeal of this compelling suite. Unfortunately, the rest of his compositions and arrangements on this long unavailable LP have not stood the test of time very well.

The Piano Concerto/MGV is the 23rd album by Michael Nyman, released in 1994. It contains two compositions, The Piano Concerto and MGV. The first is performed by Kathryn Stott and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Nyman, and the second is performed by the Michael Nyman Band and Orchestra with Michael Nyman at the piano.
The Piano Concerto is based entirely on material selected from the soundtrack for Jane Campion’s film The Piano. It is a single movement work in four phases. 3 of them feature 18th and 19th century popular Scottish song tunes, which formed the basis of Ada’s music in the film. MGV (Musique à Grand Vitesse) was commissioned by the Lille Festival, France. It was first performed on 26th September 1993 for the inauguration of the TGV North-European line.

Founded just after the war by Thomas Beecham as the instrument of his total artistic freedom, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has become one of the most prominent advocates of British music and gained the nickname of “Britain’s national orchestra”. This collection highlights the major romantic and modern composers of the country, including the lesser known but still fascinating Granville Bantock, Arthur Sullivan, Henry Wood and Arthur Bliss. Many top-class conductors have collaborated with the orchestra along its rich history, here represented by Thomas Beecham, André Previn, Charles Groves, Charles Mackerras, Malcolm Sargent and Andrew Litton. Soloists featured include Jacqueline du Pré, Christopher Parkening, Nigel Kennedy and John Ogdon.

Mozart composed some fifty symphonies, if we include works he adapted from opera overtures or serenades by adding movements or taking them away. The first dates from 1764-5, at the time of his childhood visit to London, and most are early works, quite short. Many are associated with his boyhood travels (his first trip to Italy in 1769-71, for instance) but his most prolific period as a symphonist was between 1771 and 1774 when, in Salzburg, he wrote no fewer than seventeen.

This is one of my favorite recordings with Ortiz's renditions of the Rachmaninov and Addinsell ranking with some of the best I've heard. For me, the real attraction of this recording, however, is Gottschalk's "Grand Fantasia Triumfal" (Variations on the Brazilian National Anthem). Although originally a solo piano piece, it was arranged for piano and orchestra by Samuel Adler, which I recall hearing on a budget recording from the 1980s that I've long lost. In all honesty, it didn't really grab me as worthwhile. However, on this recording, pianist Ortiz and Chris Hazell (the producer of this recording) re-worked Adler's arrangement into something far more exciting and noble.

Continuing as ever on a journey of new and exciting discoveries, SOMM now brings to the catalogue of recorded music two justly admired Piano Concertos by South American and Spanish composers. The first is by Francisco Mignone, one of the finest Brazilian composers of the 20th century. His Piano Concerto from 1958 is brilliant, full of originality and technically challenging both for orchestra and pianist. It clearly merits wide circulation and Brazilian pianist Clélia Iruzun with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jac van Steen, clearly relishes the challenge, both technical and interpretative.
