Nachdem kurz vor dem Weihnachtsfest 2019 mit Christus das Kind der Auftakt der Trilogie bereits durch die Kantorei Barmen-Gemarke nach über hundert Jahren wieder aufgeführt worden ist, folgt nun das Werk, das zwar innerhalb der Trilogie an zweiter Stelle steht, aber chronologisch zuerst entstanden ist.

This recording of Bach's John Passion gives listeners a refreshing outlook, shining a new light into one of the best known pieces of the choral repertoire. John Butt recreates the Good Friday Vesper liturgy of a passion performance during Bach's time at Leipzig; in addition to the Dunedin Consort performance of Bach's composition, this recording features music from an original Leipzig hymn book with works by Jacob Händl, J. H. Schein and J Crüger performed by a congregational choir and the University of Glasgow Chapel Choir.

Set for international release on August 2 via Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company, the live recording continues the Yellow Label’s special collaboration with the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
